Is the medical extension visa that a visa agent is offering in Thailand legitimate or a scam?

I’ve just received this message from a visa agent who is constantly spamming me.

Has anyone heard of this visa and is it real?

It’s not very easy to see just what they are getting at.

‘Hallo, we keep it short, if you use the amnesty and not plan to depart Thailand before 31st July we suggest that you get a medical extension for either 30days=thb6500, 60days=thb12000 or 90days=thb18000 within 25th July. Than we can do a conversion inside Thailand for Non O 3month=thb20000. Further extension possible. Honestly we not expect that border run will start on 1st August. Thank you

TLDR : Answer Summary
The message from the visa agent has raised concerns among expats regarding the legitimacy of the medical extension visa. Many users believe it to be a scam, highlighting risks of legal issues, including fines and deportation, if obtained under false pretenses. Some suggest that while medical extensions are a legitimate route, using a questionable agent poses significant risks. Discussions include warnings about unsolicited messages from agents and advice to approach immigration directly to avoid scams.

Report to police about this agent, I'm sure it's fraud

Let me tell you a short story. Three years ago a friend had a Medical Extension done by an "Agent"... He went into the local Immigration Office at one point. The I/O at the Front Desk looked at his passport as said "This is FAKE" we know who processes these. She stamped it as bogus (using Thai Immigration terminology). Then put in a stamp that he had 7 days to leave Thailand.

So go ahead and pay tens of thousands of Baht - let the Agent have some fake or bribed doctor sign the Medical Extension (as he does for many others - becoming well known to Thai Immigration). Then if you are lucky you will get only a 7 day stamp to leave Thailand... (but better than being put in jail for Immigration fraud).

I've never understood anyone using agencies in Thailand! There simply is no need. I've come to learn the Thai government are sceptical to about anyone using agencies! You can do everything yourself! 25 years I've never needed one. Just go to your local immigration office they will explain everything.

@Anthony *******
right but if you want a medical extension with nothing seriously wrong with you (or even with- you usually have to be SERIOUSLY incapacitated inpatient in hospital)? Or a retirement extension but don't have 800k. This is why people use agents. Just explaining.

totally agree if you have a regular situation you don't NEED one (although it may reduce queueing for certain categories). But not everyone can meet the requirements to do it themselves and agents can bend to an extent, less now maybe than historically but still to an extent. OP's post is an example of that. How would an unmarried unemployed under 50 go about getting an extension right now?
Dianne *****
@Ivan ***********
an unmarried, unemployed under 50yo foreigner could get an Ed visa right now
Anthony ********
@Ivan ***********
yes! And my experience you can ask the immigration office. They are there to help you! At least that's what I've always found.
Ivan ************
People use agencies for two reasons, 1 convenience and not having to queue, and 2 to bend the rules and get a visa that might be difficult to get themselves. It's not difficult to understand.
Anthony ********
@Ivan ***********
up to you just saying I've never had to use one.

Someone who provides visa services for those who want them, as
@Ivan ***********
had to painstakingly explain to you.

however, in my case, had you read my post correctly and not made assumptions, who also sends out unsolicited text messages to people in the hope of drumming up business.

My none o is due to be extended already it ran out a few days back, i can get 60 days for 1900b or I could, well if none of this was going on, should I go get the extension anyway? Someone said don’t bother no visas atm, then again if I did extend I’d be staying till August, I’m kinda confused wether to attempt the extension or wether it’s pointless as we are all being told to leave on x date anyway plus am I overstaying now? Technically I didn’t extend so yes right? Will I be fined? Will the extension be granted? I’m so confused any help would be massively appreciated, and yeah I’m getting 5 messages a day via fb messenger and line for various visas 99% seem like scammers and some of the messages are definitely trying to scare people

When the medical extension is not based on a real medical reason / problem it is a scam and illegal. Immigration scrutinizes Medical Extensions closely
Juan **********
Medical visa... not a scam.... just another way to stay in Thailand a little longer.....many agents can get them for you.

- When the medical extension is not based on a real medical reason it is a scam.
Juan **********
Guess so.....
Ivan ************
It's dodgy in that it sounds like they are obtaining medical extensions for people who may not have anything wrong with them.

But the medical extension is a legit extension, up to 90 days a time. I was on this myself for six months after a bad accident. I could believe that if an agent had connections/people willing to sign off on it that this could be possible.

So- dodgy, yes absolutely. But you might actually get the extension you pay for.

Pay them in lead

I've been contacted last April by an agency I have seen on Facebook; when I have seen they "no bank money, only cash" I have thought it's a jackal.
Allan ************
Reputable companies do not chase you.
James **************
Tell them to stick it up their arse.

Wait until towards near the end of july to see if you want to go down the visa agent route.

They are just taking advantage of people who are in panic mode.
Andy *****
Use only trustworthy and reliable agents with a history of delivering the goods, including a full refund slip. If they do not guarantee a full refund, do not do business with them because they are a scam
Dianne *****
I don't think it's a scam just targeted marketing. If you do have a need for a medical visa you can get your treating doctor to provide you with the relevant paperwork and take it to Immigration yourself. Or get a friend to take it in for you if you are too incapacitated. No need to use an agent if you legitimately have a reason to use this visa to stay here. Getting a medical visa under false pretence will cost you big money in agents fees and puts you at significant risk legally
James ***********
Tourist visa extension based on medical reasons, I’ve heard of this.... and in the amnesty it seems fair and reasonable? If immigration allow the stamp for example.... how is it illegal?
Steve **********
@James **********
Need letter from Hospital.. not unusual .

With valid reasons, condition signed by a Thai MD. at Hospital. Don't thing clinics.
Kev **********
@James **********
it's illegal if ther is nothing actually wrong with you
Roy ***********
Tourist visa category MT: Medical Tourist.

I believe this is big bussiness, as many people will enter Thailand as a medical tourist in the first wave.
Chanin **********
Its a scam m sure they just want you to send money
Kev **********
They are not making money due to amnesty and are so desperate at the moment
Joe ***********
Allowing a Visa agent to create a Medical Extension is risking a big fine, jail and deportation

Scam!

There's an ad for some visa service that keeps popping up on my feed. It's something like "we can get you a volunteer visa". Is that a Non O? Seems a bit dodgy as well :)
Thomas ********************
Interesting :)

@Tho***
Yeah, non-O based on volenteering. Same basic paper work process as a Non-B, but has to be for a non profit registered with the government, and need to show financials that you can support yourself.

I had a similar experience and when I asked the company how many of those type visas they can sponsor per year they blocked me

Sounds dodgy AF 🤣
