I have a doubt about the fixed deposit required to obtain
the 1 year retirement visa.
We are a married couple and I am not sure whether the 800,000 Baht deposit is per person OR per couple
Thanks for your help!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The confusion regarding the 800,000 Baht fixed deposit requirement for the retirement visa in Thailand has been clarified. If both partners are applying for individual Non-O retirement visas, then each will need to have 800,000 Baht, totaling 1,600,000 Baht in deposits. However, if one spouse holds a Non-O retirement visa and the other applies for a trailing spouse visa, only the primary retirement visa holder needs the 800,000 Baht deposit. Therefore, it could be per couple or per person depending on their specific visa applications.

NEVER EVER trust an immigration officer INSIDE the country about anything you can do visa-wise at a thai embassy OUTSIDE the country
AND
NEVER EVER trust an embassy official OUTSIDE the country about anything you can do visa/extension-wise at an immigration office INSIDE the country.
They are two completely different governmental agencies (who seem to rarely interact other than to contradict one another ๐ )
When you go to talk to the immigration office tell then you and your spouse are comin' in on 90 day Non-O visas, you for retirement and your spouse based on trailing spouse.
Leave it at that and ask the requirements so you can get your retirement extension and what is needed to be done as far as any certification of your marriage certificate so your spouse can get the matching trailing spouse extension.
this is written by the Phuket Immigration Volunteers and is pretty close to what you will be doing on your 90 day Non-O visa
There is stuff in there that pertains to a Non-OA visa (just ignore it)
I think you're actually getting the cart WAY before the horse, in so far as you don't know what the requirements will be next september BUT you're out nothing by asking
All you want to do is tell them you are comin' in on a Non-O 90 day visa (period end of story) and you want the hand out for you to get a year extension based on retirement, AND you want the hand out to get your wife the trailing spouse extension that matches yours.

As people pointed out the only way to use just ONE bank account with 800K baht in it (for the primary retiree visa holder) is to get BOTH people a 90 day non-O visa based BEFORE you wing your way here.
Otherwise you're BOTH gonna hafta have 800K baht EACH in a thai bank account in your own names.
SO your first step is applying for the 90 day Non-O visas in your country before you come here. (y)
excellent information. I will definitely follow your advice.
I am coming to Phuket next week for an exploratory trip. I will confirm all the above with Phuket immigration office before coming again next September to settle in Thailand.

BTW...many of the replies you received on another forum you posted this question on...are...pardon me... wrong.
If you are already in Thailand BOTH of you will need to have 800,000 Thai baht on deposit at a Thai bank.
800+800=1,600,000 Thai baht in deposits.
There is NO trailing spouse or piggy back option when applying for the one year extension of stay as retiree age 50+ in Thailand.

Depending on what visa exactly you are on.
1. If you two are on Non-O retirement for each, you need 800K for each for your 1-year extension.
2. If one of you is on Non-O retirement (or being over 50) and another is on Non-O dependant on the foreigner who is staying in Thailand legally (or trailing spouse), you need 800K for only the person who is on Non-O retirement for a 1-year extension for both
And the fixed deposit account SHOULD be withdrawable even with some fee. IF it is totally fixed, means you can not withdraw ONE baht until xxx date, you cannot use that account for your extension.

If you are outside of Thailand...
...Both of you need to obtain a Non O as 50+ retiree...at your Thai Embassy or Consulate.
Then when in Thailand...
...Only one deposit of 800,000 Thai baht is needed in a Thai bank account in one persons name and a TRAILING SPOUSE one year extension of stay is granted to both of you.
Your husband is applying for a Non-O Visa Based on Being Over 50 at the local Thai Consulate.
...The "piggyback visa" is known as the Non-O Visa Based on Being a Trailing Spouse to a Foreigner.
...The marriage must be legal and actual (that means, you two will be living together, and you formally have a marriage certificate).
...Both of these visas are 90 day single entry visas.
...The Non-O Visa Based on Being a Trailing Spouse to a Foreigner can only be acquired OUTSIDE of Thailand.
When there's 30 days remaining on the existing "ADMITTED TO" stamp, you and the husband will go to the immigration office and acquire the relevant One Year Extension of Stays. He will get a One Year Extension of Stay Based on Retirement, and you will get a One Year Extension of Stay Based on Being a Trailing Spouse.
There is no income requirements or health insurance requirements for this extension of stay.
Would I be corrected in thinking they'd need their marriage certificate certified (whether that be overseas or here at a Foreign Embassy in Thailand) and later translated into Thai?
actually in situations where one is married and meets the requirements their spouse gets what's called a "Trailing Spouse" extension, NOT a dependent one (which is for raising foreign kids here) BUT you have the idea 100% correct ๐
then both of you should apply for Non O as a retiree....in your home country.
Upon entering Thailand go to your local Thai immigration office and ask for their list of requirements for the one year extension of stay as retired...with one spouse as trailing.
