Do my wife and I need separate bank accounts to apply for retirement visas in Thailand?

Quick question.

My wife and I will apply for 'retirement' visas shortly.

The required cash in the bank is THB 700K.

We have a joint SCB account.

Will 700K suffice for both upon application, or will we need to prove 1400K?

Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for retirement visas in Thailand, each applicant must meet the financial requirements independently, which typically involves demonstrating a balance of 800,000 THB in a personal bank account (not a joint account) for each applicant. If one spouse meets the financial threshold, the other may be able to piggyback on their visa application based on marriage.

You CANNOT have joint accounts ulelss you have TWICE the amount of money required in it (half for your wife and have for you).

BUT the good news is only one of you has to meet the financial requirements and other person piggy-backs on their extension based on marriage to someone who has a long term extension here.

you both get 90 day single entry Non-Immigrant Type O visas him based on being over 50 (retirement) and you based on being married to him. Then when that 90 days is running out he applies for a yearly extension of stay by meeting the financial requirements and you apply for a yearly extension of stay by being married to someone who is on a year extension of stay.

IF you are already IN thailand you should check with your immigration office to see if they can issue you two the 90 day Non-O visas. IF you are still in Canada you should check with the thai consulate in your area.

Tod, yes! There's my answer. My hubby has monthly VA pension, I have none. Both American, over 50. How do I piggyback on his retired visa?

Sorry if I asked a repetitive question.

Thanks for all who answered. Appreciate it.

I've been following this page for a while now and it seems to me that the same questions are being asked all the time. Wouldn't it be a good idea if there was a website with all the information about living in Thailand including visas, accommodation, expats groups etc. Is there such a website?

. I hate getting my head bit off for asking a question. Even if it'd been answered before.

If only there was some sort of 'search' function on facebook pages ;)

I chose to ask a question, albeit a question that maybe had been answered before. Simply, do both of us need to prove funds from separate accounts or would a joint account suffice.

I got some valuable information. I'm thankful for that.

Why people feel the need to criticize, berate, or belittle someone who asks a question is beyond me.

A somewhat innocent mistake.

Problem is that not every consulate or embassy have the same rules and change some times. Immigration Offices in Thailand have the same rules but do not enforce them all the same. And people prefer to ask on facebook than using a search option, like this page also have.

Please read this about all those Visa and Extension of Stay called "Retirement". Without knowing which way you go, we can not give information:

Thanks. I'd actually saved that thread. Really good information.

It's 400lk if married 800k if single so you need 2 x 400k or income equivalent or bit of both
Laura *****************
Oh, I thought we were asking the same question. My bad.

To avoid confusion in different answer on different questions it is better to start a new topic with this question.

@Rob***
, she's Canadian, not Thai. My hubby and I are American. He receives a monthly VA disability pension, so no money problems there. However, I raised kids most of my life, so no pension from a late in life job. How can I piggy back on his extension? We're both over 50, but I have no pension, while his is more than enough. Help?

Admittedly, I'm also on another FB Phuket group, and I'm astounded how rude the FB warriors are.

Thanks for not being a jerk. Appreciated.

@Robert ******
thanks. Very helpful. My mistake 700k Vs 800k. I'll open separate accounts.

I've read the requirements many times, but I was mostly interested in how two applications would be treated. If that's been posted before, I'm sorry. Hadn't seen that. Cheers.
Robert *******
Okay, it is posted so many times but I will do again: For an application of the Non Immigrant O visa or Extension of Stay based on being over 50 years of age and sitting out the rest of your life in Thailand the financial requirements are: 1. minimum 800.000 Thb on a Thai bank account on your name, for Extension of Stay 2 months prior the application date at the first application or 3 months at consecutive applications. 2. a Minimum monthly income of 65.000 Thb certified by your Embassy, 3. a Combination of 1 and 2 where the total is minimum 800.000 Thb. For an Extension of Stay based on marriage with a Thai National it is 1. 400.000 Thb on a Thai bank on your name 2 months prior the application date OR 2. minimum 40.000 Thb monthly income certified by your Embassy. Please if you like to help others remember or make a note of these amounts.

Not for a retirement extension it's 800.000 each or proof of 68.000 income per month

For a marage extension based on a marriage to a Thai it's 400.000 baht in the bank
Bob *********

We're both Canadian.
Richard *******
I am guessing the wife is not a Thai National, so that information is incorrect.
Steve *******
Carl Pritchard 400,000 is for an extention of stay based on marriage to a Thai citizen. It's 800,000 or a minimum of 65,000bt per month income or a combination of the two for the extention based on being over 50 years old(usually refered to as retirement)
Paul **************
You need a minimum of 800k not 700k. Wether or not your wife can piggyback on your extension depends on where you apply for the extension. I know from experience Chiang Mai allows that but other immigration offices might not, also make sure the 800k is NOT in a joined account.
Ron *******
If your going to use a joint account for retirement purposes, i believe you are going to need a balance of 1.6 million. You can both apply as individuals or one can ride on the back of the others extension. Either way, immigration will look at the account as
*****
. You need 800,000 per single extension.
