TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for retirement visas (O or OA) in Thailand, each person must meet the financial deposit requirements individually, which typically includes depositing 800,000 THB in a Thai bank account. While one spouse can potentially apply for a non-O visa based on being over 50 and use their funds, if both are applying, they each need to have the deposit. The specifics can depend on the type of visa being applied for and the circumstances of each individual.

the OA does come with other requirements but will get a dependent visa associated with it. The other requirements such as police check and insurance need to be taken into account

It's about the visa type. A non-O based on being over 50 requires 800,000 in a Thai bank account if you cannot get embassy certified income verification. So if both spouses want to apply for this, they both need their own 800,000.

If one spouse wants to get the non-O based on being over 50 and the other one gets the trailing spouse non-O, then only the first spouse needs the money. The issue with this is that very few embassies offer this visa anymore and it's not available in Thailand at all.

Each person has to fulfil the formal requirements individually. The requirements don’t refer to “a couple”, only “an alien”.

A Non O-A visa can only be applied for at the embassy/consulate that serves your permanent residence. You both can apply with proof of income, but for an extension of stay in Thailand you’ll need to prove funds individually anyway.
