My husband and I, both US citizens and both over 50, will be moving to Thailand very soon and plan to apply for the Non-O visa. Regarding the bank account, will we both need separate accounts each with 800,000 baht?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Two U.S. citizens over 50 are planning to apply for Non-O visas in Thailand and are unsure if each needs a separate bank account with 800,000 baht. Responses indicate that typically, each individual must meet the financial requirements separately if applying for the Non-O visa based on retirement in Thailand. However, there are alternatives such as one spouse holding a retirement visa while the other might qualify under a dependent category, depending on specific visa applications.

that depends on what you mean by "Non-O visa". If you want to apply for in-country Non-O visas based on retirement for each, each of you has to meet the financial requirements separately.

If you mean Non-O based on retirement for one of you at the Thai embassy or inside Thailand, and Non-O dependent (if you can manage to apply somehow) outside Thailand, only Non-O visa based on retirement holder needs to meet the financial requirement. dependent doesn't have financial requirements.

Well, we were both planning on applying in Thailand for the Non-O and each meeting the financial requirements. But I watched something that caused me to ask this question. It sounds like it may be a little more involved to try and do the visa holder/dependent method. Plus, I’d have to request a marriage certificate and pay for that so it just seems like added hassles and expense.

Thanks for your response.

you can't get the "trailing spouse" dependant non-o visa inside Thailand, nor in any of the nearby embassies as far as I'm aware. You may be able to get it in your home country if both apply at the same time but some want you to apply for the non-oa visa before they will issue it.

, no it’s not possible if they want to apply for Non-O based on retirement. US citizen can not get affidavit of monthly income, or use 65k baht monthly international transfers for in-country Non-O visa based on retirement and for the first yearly extension.

Yes unless you can get one retirement visa before travelling and one trailing spouse visa if the US consulates issue them

this is how we did ours. Got it online while still in the US, hubs 90 day retirement visa first. Then used it as supporting doc (online in US again) to get my trailing spouse 90 day visa.

Came to Thailand together and only he needed to open his 800k account.

Then we both extended to 1 yr visas in Thailand at immigration

I tried this 17 months and the Thai embassy in Wash DC wouldn't give me it to me. My husband was already in Thailand and had his retirement extension, O visa (which I submitted). They said they only would issue the 90 day O visa to me if my husband had a employment Visa NOT a retirement Visa.

How long ago was this? And did you have to provide a marriage certificate or proof of health insurance coverage for 90 days?

@Tree ******
2 yrs, we didn't have a insurance requirement then for the non O. 🤷‍♀️

Everything was scanned and pdfs sent, but DONT FORGET to bring all your originals with you(ie marriage cert) to Thailand, you'll need it for the extension.

is correct.

NonO and trailing spouse.

Make sure the bank account you open is a fixed term with approximately 2.5% interest
