Is Ranong the only option for border run in Myanmar? Mae Sot and Mae Sai still closed? Any other usable border crossing?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Currently, Ranong is the only operational option for a border run into Myanmar, as all other land borders, including Mae Sot and Mae Sai, are closed to foreigners. Some travelers suggest considering a border crossing by boat at Kawthoung or traveling to Laos for similar purposes.

A friend of mine did a visa bounce at Ranong yesterday.

Yep apparently that's the only option for Myanmar, I did that 2 months ago, you can share the details (costs, requirements) and let's see if anything has changed

I’m currently in Krabi & this is my best option, would i come into any problems with this being my second border bounce ? would bring me to 6 months in thailamd (except one border bounce to golden triangle)

@Rob ******
you can do 2 border bounce in a calendar year. From Krabi Malaysia might be a good option too, depending on what plans you have next

We're definitely going to try this - a bit of a drive from Hua Hin but we are looking forward to seeing parts of Thailand that we haven't seen before. My final Q is this,: I have been searching online for a list of the docs we need to have with us. I have read lots of interesting anecdotal stories but nothing particularly current . As far as I can make out, I should have the following docs with me; passport, proof of flight home,

thb and $10-20 dollars? Obviously we'll need cash for the ferry and we also have our Covid certificates. Is there anything else we should have with us? We also have extra photos and copies of our passports and our proof of residence in HH. Do you think that will be enough? I know it's a long drive, but it's a little birthday trip for me. If for any reason it doesn't work,we still have time to drive to Malaysia,but we'd honestly prefer not to. Thank you again for your help and advice. 😁

Also,as we have a METV, will we definitely get the 60 days added? Thank you again.

All land borders with Myanmar are closed to foreigners and not likely to change any time soon. Either go to Laos or try to navigate crossing by boat at Kawthoung.

@Brandon ***********
boat crossing is extremley easy

50 baht/seat across the 30 minute ride or 500 for the boat and he will wait for to run u back to Ranong.

PLUS its a cool trip

getting to Ranong thou is 6 hours + hours
Nigel *********
Since when has ranong been closed
Lynnette *******
@Nigel ********
he's explained several times land borders closed to foreigners, only Ranong open going over by boat.
Julie **********
@Lynnette ******
but not for foreigners?
Lynnette *******
@Julie *********
not sure what you're asking. "Not for foreigners"?
Julie **********
@Lynnette ******
according to Brandon he says that all land borders are closed to foreigners yet Richard Reitman suggests that the boat crossing is extremely easy. Does that mean we could go across for the day to renew our Visa? Yes I know we can fly to wherever and we're lucky that we've been to most other neighbouring countries,we just fancied going on a road trip this time. And Ranong was one of the places mentioned. But if it's definitely not possible, we'll make a different plan. Thank you.
Lynnette *******
@Julie *********
Ranong is not a land border. It's over water. You go by boat. It's open to foreigners for border bounce.
Richard *********
@Lynnette ******
its open to farangs also if u have a visa an than you can fly north to other places in Burma> BUT u cant travel overland
Lynnette *******
@Richard ********
it's been said already that Ranong is open for ferang border bounce but land borders are not.
Julie **********
@Lynnette ******
thank you so much for your reply. I really appreciate that. Many thanks 🙏

@Julie *********
hope you enjoy the road trip. There's info somewhere on what to have, and what to do, to get over to Ranong.

yep did that 2 months ago, boat seat more like 100-200 each way + 500 for immigration and you have to travel with 20k cash on you which is a bit sketchy, plus they enforce other requirements like proof of accomodation and onward flight. I'm ok with all that but was looking for an option more in the north, is there no other border option at all with Myanmar?
Brandon ************
@Daniele **********
how many times do you need to be told there is no other land border option with Myanmar?

yeah I agree, just look at your profile. If I make a post is because I'm looking for answers from more than a person, anybody can miss something

when people click the like button, like six people did on Brandon's comment, that means they agree with him, just like 6 other people saying the same thing. You are aware of that right?

@Daniele **********
I live in Mae Sai, the border here is closed for foreigners.
Julie **********
@Brandon ***********
even if we have a UK passport? We're trying to find out the best way to do this from HH. Thank you.
Andreas *********
@Julie *********
if you are in Hua Hin, you can do the border run with a "visarun agency" via Ranong and Myanmar, and back on the same day. This is the only land/sea border to Myanmar that is open for foreigners
Frank **********
@Julie *********
yes UK passport holders get special treatment, 5555
Brandon ************
@Julie *********
ALL land borders with Myanmar are closed to foreigners. Having a UK passport doesn't make you magically not a foreigner. If you're in Hua Hin just go to Bangkok and fly somewhere.

If you're in Hua Hin why are you even asking about Mae Sot and Mae Sai?
Lynnette *******
Thought you were going to Vientiane, but had already been to Savannakhet.
Daniele ***********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Lynnette ******
not going Vientiane since they don't offer the visa I want, also don't want to go Savannakhet again yet, looking for a border bounce in the north/northwest
Lynnette *******
@Daniele **********
you're married to a Thai so why are you border bouncing or going out of country?
Daniele ***********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Lynnette ******
I enjoy traveling more than spending time in immigration offices and having to deal with re-entry permits, tm30s, 90 day reports and all of their bulls***s
Lynnette *******
@Daniele **********
don't people do 90 day reports on line and only go to immigration 1 time a year? Seems easier than what you've been doing for a very long time.
Daniele ***********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Lynnette ******
we are off topic but for someone who travel multi entry visa is surely easier
Lynnette *******
@Daniele **********
you could have got multi entry visa, but you've done exempt, border bounce etc and aren't you choosing Ranong to bounce again? Seems very time consuming.
Daniele ***********

@Lynnette ******
I'm not going Ranong, I was planning a trip to Chiang Mai so looking for borders in north/west, if there's none would just extend at immigration. I'm going Laos next month anyway so will just get visa there after
