TLDR : Answer Summary
Due to the ongoing conflict in Burma, the only available land border for crossing from Thailand is through Ranong to Myanmar. Expats in Chiang Mai looking for alternative visa run options can also consider crossing to Laos, particularly via the Golden Triangle, with access points from Mae Sai or Chiang Khong. It's essential to plan ahead, as the situation can change, and options may vary.
From Chiang Mai, you go to the Golden Triangle crossing with Laos 33km from Mae Sai or Chiang Khong. Coming from Chiang Mai, compared to crossing at Mae Sai, it's not much further away. Like an extra 20 minutes drive. Chiang Khong is slightly further away but not by much.
