Is it safe to leave my passport with a school while awaiting my education visa in Thailand, given my visa exemption is about to expire?

My 30 day visa exemption on arrival stamp expires Wednesday but my passport is with the school that is handling the education visa. The visa contact I have at the school says not to worry “Ok , I got it , as I said nothing to worry about bc your visa is in the immigration system no matter what date your exemption expires” is there any truth to this? Wny guidance would be appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user inquired about the validity of their education visa's status while their passport was with their school and their 30-day visa exemption was about to expire. Responses cautioned against leaving passports with institutions for prolonged periods and emphasized the risks of overstaying a visa. Some commenters shared their experiences, noting that reputable schools typically do not retain passports longer than necessary. Others advised retrieving the passport to avoid potential immigration issues, urging the user to act quickly given the impending visa expiration.

I did 3 ED visa in a row with the same school in Phuket (Patong) and they handled the whole procedure every time and took and kept my passport until I got my visa each time. Then later, I would go to the immigration with a school representative cause a visa is something personal and they need to actually see you for it.

So I would say yes, it's normal. Your ED visa has to go in your passport and that's the school that's handling the whole procedure with the immigration.after getting a letter from the ministry of education. So how would the school obtain your visa if they don't take your passport until it's done ?

The whole process between the school, the ministry of education and the immigration takes about 3 weeks.

I suppose you gave your passport to the school something like 3 weeks or more before your visa exemption expired, right? So IN THIS CASE, once the procedure is on track, you don't have to worry about your previous expiring date.

Don't hesitate to contact me back for more details, if needed.

None of that requires them to have your passport. As you said, you must be present in person to actually apply for and receive the visa.

The application to the ministry of education does not require the school to have your passport. My school took copies and then when they received the approval from the ministry, asked me to come in and pickup the paperwork to take to immigration and get my visa. The only time they ever had my passport was for 5 minutes while they made copies for their part of the paperwork.

If they say don't worry, than you really need to worry. Get your passport back and go to immigration tomorrow for an 1900 baht 30 days extension.

Legitimate schools don't keep your passport. Have you been going to classes, and not online?

You are going to be on over stay in 2 days shouldn’t have use the cheap Charlie Thai school

Visa in the system but not approved yet would mean you will be on overstay. Get your passport back and go and get the extension

There's no reason for anyone to ever have your passport. A legit school would never need your passport for more than 5 minutes to make copies. Plenty of reports of people getting told the exact same thing as you were told by agents and others, only to find out they've been on overstay for a long time and then banned from the country. You'll get in trouble, not the school.

We don't know if he is under consideration or not. OP seems kinda clueless about what is exactly happening. Keeping passport, although not the norm, especially without agent involved, is not that uncommon.

saying that when I first got my Non-O immigration told me to come back on a particular date to get it stamped in. Turns out it was a holiday and also the last day of my existing permission to stay. I didn't want to get into overstay so jumped over to Cambodia for another 30 days (I'm very near Aranyaprathet). Bad move. They made me start over again with the Non-O but also told me it's not possible to go on overstay while an application is under consideration.

this person is not under consideration. They dropped their passport off at a school and now the school is telling them everything is okay with no proof to back it up.
