Is it safe to book flights to Bangkok amid COVID-19 variant concerns?

Hi all, I know there is no way of being certain on this as things are always changing, however, I’m looking to book my flights and gather documentation to travel to Bangkok on 28th December. Am I being optimistic with this new variant in the news? Or do we think this might be ok? Any tips or advice on perhaps booking a flexi ticket or any kind of insurance that would cover my flight if things are to change would be greatly appreciated too. Thanks 😊

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around concerns over booking flights to Bangkok due to a new COVID-19 variant. Participants agree it's uncertain, but many suggest booking flexible tickets and waiting a bit longer before making hotel reservations to assess the situation. It’s noted that quarantine hotels are available and PCR tests are abundant, indicating ongoing travel feasibility despite restrictions. Generating a Thailand Pass and understanding visa requirements are also highlighted, particularly for UK travelers who should be eligible.

I think test and go will still be happening but as it is now one night hotel and pcr test, not the antigen test they were suggesting

You should come. Quarantine hotels will still be open and PCR tests are plentiful. Nothing else open!

I don't have exact dates yet, but I'm planning to go over about the same time. I going to get everything planned in advance and start booking about two weeks in advance of travel.

Some things to consider.

Are you qualified for the test and go program?

Will you need to get a visa or just a Thai pass?

I’m from the uk so should be fine. I think I’m going to apply for a visa to get 3 months with extension rather than two. Im not sure on the requirements of the visa will need to check that out

It’s all up in the air , but remember , there have been 10 variants of concern so far , only the delta has had significant impact , and South Africa had two before this one which caused no impact to other parts of the world. The main reason delta did was because India is so densely populated and a major trade / air travel route. I would opt for flexible flight dates and delay hotel bookings a bit to be safe but definitely not a reason to suspect complete border closure yet.

My advice would be keep as much as you possibly can flexible. Book directly with the airline for your flights. Any hotels you book look for a good cancellation policy. Even the one night Quarentine can be flexible. Look for easy ability to change dates and ability to get a refund if the rules change.

I would just try to get a flexible flight ticket if you can get a good price now. Everything else can be done in a couple of weeks after we see what's going on. It's no problem booking hotel, insurance, and getting Thailand Pass in a week or two.

its all in the air... I've got my visa ready to fly back but now my other half is coming to England. A quick look at flights from BKK to BHX or MAN sbow ridiculous flight times... emirates are usually 16 hours with a couple of hours connection in DXB, but now thye are quoting times of 20hours plus! Same goes for Etihad... so im guessing this new covid variant is the cause

The slightest change in demand (increase or decrease) will cause that. Don't read too much into it yet. But I get your point. I hope it all works out for you and your family.
