Is it possible to get another METV after a 30-day overstay in Thailand?

Partially signed up for a language course today and ED visa, but upon further research I found out what a pain it is with the 90 day check-ins as well as the 60 day extensions on top. Might as well move to Chaengwattana.

I was thinking of getting an METV as I am going home to my country for a 1 month visit. I have one METV from last year that ended in April of this year. Then another single entry one up until now. Full disclosure I do have an overstay stamp in my passport for over 30 days, (it was ignorance on my part not knowing the entry rules, but an accident not trying to play with the rules). But no red stamp, and only total previous tourist visa stickers. If I were to go that route, would I be ok to get another METV in my country & should I get a new passport beforehand?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The poster is contemplating obtaining another Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) after experiencing complications with an Education Visa (ED visa) due to the 90-day check-ins and 60-day extension requirements. They have a past overstay of over 30 days but without a red stamp in their passport. Throughout the comments, various suggestions are made regarding the feasibility of getting another METV, the implications of the overstay, and advice on how to present oneself when re-entering Thailand. Some commenters recommend applying for a new passport to avoid issues related to the overstay when applying for the METV. The overall sentiment leans towards the idea that getting the METV seems to be the most convenient option for the poster's situation.

Sounds like you're working to me and if I think that then it's only a matter of time before immigration does.

Good to hear.

Well Troy you are quite wrong on that one bud.

A job is a much better idea dude.

I get raged at most days. Currently getting boxed in the stomach for being on my phone instead of playing UNO with her. It's a tough life in Thailand. 555

Probably haven't seen too many Thai girls raging at their boyfriends yet haha

Not a huge fan of those though.

I guess I will go for the METV when I am at home then as if I can squeeze another in, it seems to be the best option atm. As I was just granted a SETV in Penang last month (with all the above things mentioned in my passport), and was issued one, I think I should be ok on this passport seeing as ill be out for a month anyway.

The things we do to stay in the country we love .. Maybe ill try to find a wife by 2018 😂 .
Steve ********
Not sure having a wife will make your life any easier.

Not to cast dispersions :O but it seems like you are contemplating going down the ED visa route no so much to learn a language but to just facilitate your stay here.

I think an METV is the way for you to go, especially given the minimum hours you have to study a week, the mandatory testing at the Ministry of Education at the 6 month mark, the time needed to go get extensions of stays every 60 days & do 90 day reporting.

The thing with them is that I don't think they deny enough people to get in any trouble for that, but since the latest terrorist issues the immigration department was put under a lot of scrutiny and it seems like they are just going for these harsh enforcement to give everyone the idea that they are much stricter now and protecting the country.

Yea, if only the IO's were so understanding haha.

I guess you just have to worry about the 20k again then. I don't know if knowing the law helps here because they seem to be very arbitrary. I guess the only advice I can think of is just to try to look/act overly respectful and just have your stories straight. Seems like a visa might be helpful, but it's probably more dependent on the immigration officer than your passport.

I guess it's fairly understandable, everyone makes mistakes, I wouldn't be too worried about it.

@Tod ********
Yea I heard about that afterwards.

@Ke***
, I thought it was strange that they pulled the 20K baht cash thing on you. The real rule about proof of funds on a 30 day visa exempt (or a 15 day visa on arrival) the amount is only 10K baht.
Kevin ***********
ORIGINAL POSTER
At least they put the denial sticker on the very last page of my passport. which was nice of them as its a newer passport (1 year).

@Tod ********
Yes Tod the first lady tried using that on me and I politely said that rule was gone years ago... then they counted my money and I only had 19k cash on me so the official reason of denial was ''lack of funds''.
Tod *********
@David *********
when you get denied they sometimes ask for proof of funds and you need to show it in cash. BUT sometimes they deny people entering on a 30 day visa exempt entry because they use the "totally made up rule" about only so long in country in a 6 month period. <- Which by the way is total b/s because there is no rule like that.

David I can show bank accounts from home, I can show income from outside Thailand but I am still worried they would get confused and immediately think something dodgy.

@Tod ********
That will be the plan I think just go up to Udon and cross at Laos, unless I take an extended trip out for a month or something. It's just that initial airport entry to Swampy in September that I am weary about.
David **********
Can you show income coming from outside of Thailand? I assume you work online or something?

@David *********
Ya it was in July I did my first every 1 day in/out and was denied at DMK. I just did a 30 day exemption as I only had just over a month till I was going home for a visit and was just going to extend it. I came back in 3 days later no questions asked once I had obtained an actual visa.
Tod *********
@Ke***
, I remember, the denial you had was so strange even I couldn't believe it. :O :/

I'd say get the METV and do your bounces by land to avoid the two airports in bangkok (if you can).
David **********
You were denied entry at the airport? You didn't have a tourist visa or you did?

I think if there are suspicions, or worries of them, you should have a good story with proof of how you have been staying here....
Kevin ***********
ORIGINAL POSTER
Yea for this one though I wouldn't need to do the testing luckily.

I'm just worried having another METV I might get grilled upon my entry back into Suvarnabhumi. After that first initial one I would just ended via land border.

I was denied entry in July in anyone recalls my story so that's why I was seeking ways out of the tourist visa cycle.
David **********
Over 30 day overstay looks bad, but I don't know if they would hold that against you.

If you can fulfill the requirements for the METV then it seems like you have a good shot at it, but that really varies by embassy.

The new passport should almost guarantee it though because they would most probably not see your history if you had one.
Thomas ********************
Same here Kevin :)

Yea I was thinking the same thing. I am not so much worried about getting it approved but the whole entering through the airport gives me the shivers now haha.

Yes I agree extension every 60 days with ED visa is just about the same with the time and money spend on an international flight ticket in and out of Thailand. I used to have ED visa and then decided to get a METV instead, no more paper works and travel and waste hours at immigration office.
Troy *********
@ç‹*
Yeah what is it? 5000 baht for 90 days?
Alex ****
@Ivan ***********
oh ED visa extensions are terrible!
Alex ****
@ç‹*
which school are u studying and what course? All students at my language school in which I am studying all getting 60 days extensions, and then 90 days reports...
Ivan ************
@Al**
I think it must depend where you are as extensions usually take me literally 15 minutes. My record is 9 minutes. My longest ever in Thailand I think was around 2 hours, but that was exceptional. Certainly a lot quicker than flying out and back. These were tourist extensions though.
Jeremy ********
90 day checks can be completed online....as long as the website is actually up and running...
Robert ********
You can always appoint someone to complete your day check-in as your proxy ;-)
Ivan ************
@Cia***
the 90-day checkins were in reference to the Ed visa.
Jeremy ********
It's definitely not a reliable system

Yea from what I have seen, it seems that's about 10% of the time.
