Hi all,

How painful/not painful is doing a border bounce to Satun from Lanta? I was thinking of hiring a private driver and just going in and out on the same day and coming straight back to Lanta. Is that possible? I'm traveling on a Canadian passport. I entered Thailand for the first time two months ago by air to Bangkok, then extended at Lanta immigration after 30 days. Haven't been in the region in over 5 years because of Covid years. My plan would be to leave Lanta by 8am, get there around early afternoon, enter Malayisa, come back to Thailand and straight back to Lanta. Is that doable not too painfully? How busy does Satun get?

Thank you for any info!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the feasibility and experience of doing a border bounce from Koh Lanta to Satun for a Canadian passport holder. The traveler considers hiring a private driver for a same-day round trip and inquires about the pain level of this process. Comments from the community reflect various experiences, with some providing positive feedback about the ease of the trip, while others warn about the significance of using an experienced driver. An update reveals a challenging solo trip where the driver was unknowledgeable about border crossing, leading to issues for the traveler, including paying a bribe. Despite difficulties, the traveler found the crossing manageable but expressed a preference for a longer trip to a place like Singapore next time.

Update: solo trip with the driver was a total nightmare, guy had no idea we even needed to cross the border so probably better to use an experienced service vs. some random driver. However, once there, I found some Russian guys who told me what I needed to do, and was able to cross and come back with no problem. Was asked for a bribe of 1300b by the Thai officers, was not in the mood to argue so I paid. Arrived late around 3pm, there was no wait on either side. Would probably just do a few days trip to Singapore instead if I had to do it again but it was doable if painful.

I got a question: isn't it cheaper to buy a flight from krabi to KL than hiring a driver all the way down to satun?

and again, no, you'd surely use a visa tour agency and jump on a minibus with 8-12 others, so spreading the cost of a driver and fuel. I pay 3000-3500 from Samui and back in around 12-14 hours including the 1.5 hr ferry both ways.

2200 Ringit ? £370 GBP ? And travel cost to the airport and back ? Possibly some airport food at airport prices ? And the flight takes 1 hour perhaps. And the travel time to the airport doesn't count ? I don't know in your case. Maybe an hour each way ? Time spent in the airport ? It is an international flight. Maybe an hour each way ? So what time did you leave home, and return home ? Total journey time. Yes I do live in thailand. As for the van drivers, you think Malaysian pilots or engineers/technicians/groundstaff are any better ? Flight MH370 ? The van drivers have actually been impressively professional, they also push us through immigration, hand holding all the way. I've seen one get behind the counter and showing the immigration staff what's what and where their bonus is coming from. Another time immigration didn't want to let me re-enter, the drivers got on the phone infront of me, passed the phone over to immigration, and they immediately stamped me in and passport returned with a bottle of chilled water and an apology. And they've never asked for a baht in tips in anyway. And it's me that is high on drugs and alcohol, thats why I'm paying someone else to drive. I get in the van at 5am, fall asleep. Wake up at 11.30, already at immigration. Get back in the van maybe 12.30, wake up 5pm when we get back. Any time not asleep I'm catching up on life admin on my phone. 3000 baht, £75 GBP. I'd be stuck in Malaysia right now.

2200baht return. Well, if you prefer to spend 5 hoursx2 driving in a van which has 0 maintenance, with a bus driver that has just a couple of hrs of sleep and often is on amphetamines/alcohol then is your business. I really doubt anyone would say the van driver are professional, they have a VERY BAD REPUTATION and you can read of accidents almost everyday involving those. Anyways, I'm not going to take a private jet so I don't get the point about the impact that I'd have by taking an airplane. Take your van, I'll still go with the plane instead ;)

well I'm not going to call you a liar, but I'd love to see your booking confirmation at 2200 baht. Although Cheapest flight I ever saw was 1000 baht, so not impossible. Actually the vans are very well kept. My ex lived in a compound like place where the family ran a fleet of them out of. They were very proud of them, immaculately kept, cleaned and polished after every trip. Heads under the bonnet every day too. And the drivers are professional as I said. I think the problems are more with larger buses, night buses, and mostly in other SE Asian countries. I remember taking a car through a mountain pass in Laos and the roadside littered with carcasses of trucks and buses. Stopped for a toilet brake and saw a big bus down a shear drop, then noticed the skid marks and the exit point. It was fresh, only weeks old. Peoples stuff scattered for hundreds of meters. Haunting that was. And on the return leg, having done a u-turn to stop at a viewpoint there was a crash while we were stopped. A truck went of the road, taking a car with it, then landed on top the car crushing it, people had stopped to help, using another truck to try and pull it off. That could've been me. It was the difference between stopping for a cup of instant coffee, or a piss, or even at a red light or road junction. That shit is crazy. There, maintenance is lacking, drivers are wired. You can hear the water-cooled brakes hissing away, see the trails of water on the roads, I think that's a good sign. Anyways, whichever you prefer 👍

I paid a ticket to KL 2200 return, it took me an hour to flight there and I didn't have to deal with all those stupid people driving on the street. If you have lived in thailand you surely know how dangerous are those minibus which are often driven by drivers who are fxxked up on drugs/alcohol.

and my first point, environmental impact.

did you cycle to thailand 5555

and how did I get to Malaysia ? Kayak. A fucking kayak. I swear to you. From Langkawi. I thought it would be the equivalent to Koh pha ngan to Samui, but it was more like Liverpool to New York. Like a shipping channel. Totally underestimated that. I was aiming for Satun, obviously but settled for the closest land I could see in my panic.
Dan ********
@Michael *******
ha fucking ha Michael. That's well overplayed that one. I actually fucking walked. Beat that. Go on. I fucking walked here, from Malaysia. Taxi wouldn't take me any further. It was pissing down with rain, it was getting dark, perfect conditions for me. I said "drop me here, this will be lovely". And to top it all off, some idiot crashed his car into one of the bollards protecting the immigration building from attacks by cars, and caused a panic and scare, just as I'm stepping into an empty line'.

@Michael *********
yeah, don't even consider the environmental impact of your movements ? Do you know/care the carbon emissions of a plane just on take off, alone ? Jesus. Surely there aren't many people like you left on the planet. Additionally, To fly out and back in will take just as long as the drive, and cost considerably more.
Steve *******
Go for it, it's possible and a good guide will help you out

A friend did the land border in Satun from Trang in half a day. They do charge a fee of either 1200b or 1500b for the service

Thanks Paul that's good to know.

I used to do border run from Trang to Langkawi, spend 1 night there and come back. It's only a ferry away from Satun. Personally I think it's better than giving any bribes (don't know if they'd ask for any, just try to avoid the whole issue). They also have very nice Arabic restaurants in Malaysia :)

THanks Angelik it does sound nice, unfortunately I don't have time to do that, that's why I'm trying to it in one day.

I think you're looking for a border bounce, not a visa run?

I stand corrected! I didn't know there was a separate term for this.
Todd *********
This should be no issue at all for you. The border bounces from Samui currently aim for Satun and return in a single day. Much easier from Lanta. Good luck

Todd McGowan hi are border bounces/visa runs by air from Samui to Malaysia currently an issue TIA

thank you, that's good to hear! Any idea there's any issues with being asked to pay extra fees if I'm not going via a visa run company? Some online reports say the company acts as a fixer whereas they might ask for more bribes if you go on your own.
Dan ********
@El ****
yes, what you read is true. I hear of some even refused entry for minor matters. There is a push by immigration to use agents, after all the lost income during covid.
Dan ********
@El ****
I have heard of more and more people being given a hard time when travelling solo, without use of an visa run agency. I would just use a agency and take a seat in a van, and use that time to catch up on sleep or get some life admin done. I like to ride my motorbike, but I have twice booked with an agency, and said I'd meet the van at the border. Once to Malaysia, and once to Ranong. Everyone gets given a visible badge or something to wear around their neck to show you are with an agency and therefore 'pre-paid', and pre-checked infact, and you get rushed through, usually at lunchtime while the senior staff are out for lunch.
Todd *********
@El ****
no reports of any issues at all, but that is the case with the agencies in general. It’s possible, but very unlikely you would be asked for bribe of any sort. But be prepared to stay at least one night in Malaysia and definitely have the ‘3 proofs’ with you. 20k baht, onward ticket out of Thailand and proof of accommodation. Also Canadian and we did enter via Satun last December with no issues, but we had crossed and spent a few days in Malaysia

I'm hiring a private driver, and I wouldn't have time to spend the night in Malaysia since I'd have to find another way back. If it's not possible to come back the same day then I'd rather take a flight to SG, that's why I'm trying to find out if it doable.
