Is it okay to cancel my ED extension after returning to Bangkok instead of before my flight?

My ED extension expires tomorrow and I was going to cancel the extension today. But given the massive crowd at Chaengwattana today, I am having second thoughts and thinking of cancelling it only when I return to Bangkok again.

I plan to return to Bangkok only after I obtained my Non-B instead.

Would it be a big issue to cancel the extension only after I return back to Bangkok? What is the advice of the sages here? Should I try to cancel it tomorrow before before catching my flight instead? How complicated and how much time do I need for the cancellation?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is considering postponing the cancellation of their ED extension until after they return to Bangkok, despite it expiring soon. Community members advised that while it is possible to cancel the extension after obtaining a Non-B visa, it could lead to overstay fines. They suggest attempting cancellation at Chaengwattana upon return, emphasizing that the procedure itself is quick, though waiting times are long.

Additionally make sure they know it is an ED extension cancellation when you first get a ticket. Initially I was given a form to fill out and told to go to the wrong area. Approached another person as I felt it wasn't right and was given just a ticket to section N2. All up took around 1.5 hours on the day I went.

You cancel an extension of stay in the same section where you get it. So at Chaengwattana that means you're in the cluster-f*ck that is section N :O Once you get in front of the officer it doesn't take all that much time to cancel an extension, it's waiting for your queue number to be called that is gonna take a good long while.

Just go there when you get back AND definitely go there before you try to extend your new Non-B visa.

You could leave, get the Non-B visa, come back and then cancel your ED extension. There could be some overstay fines involved doing it but that's it.

Of course this begs the question WHY didn't you get a letter from your school weeks ago stating you were stopping studying on the date your extension exipres and go to the immigration office last week? They would have canceled your current extension and stamped you in until the date on the termination of study letter. Then you could have just exited the country.

i was told I only need to bring the letter from school but immigration said I needed to make copies of my passport with the visa and all the thai stamps related to this visa. Have to come back again basically. The officer told me no problem even if I cancel since it expired, I won’t get fined.

I got here at 1.30pm with queue 88 for N2 line. It’s only number 64 now. Only one table so fingers crossed i can get it done today.

Someone in the N1 queue just got called his number and he was here since 8.40am.

you will need a paper from your school stating you are stopping studying for them to cancel your extension.

I have seen people who left the country on an un-canceled ED extension, who got a NOn-B visa, who came back to thailand and then 2 months later when they went to extend their Non-B the immigration officer noticed they'd never canceled their ed extension and they were fined the 20K baht maximum overstay fine (even though they'd left the country BEFORE their old extension expired, gotten a new visa and came into the country on it).

Go cancel the ED extension as soon as you get back on your new visa.

Is the fine the same as in 500b/day including the days outside Thailand?

I was busy attending to other matters and was mauling the option of doing another 6 weeks extension as I haven’t completed the 9 months course. Only made up my mind yesterday not to carry on with the extension. Being away on a long weekend didn’t help matters either.
