The embassy ask me for this document

Is that normal?
Answer summary
The community discusses whether it is normal for an embassy to request additional documentation, specifically in relation to the ED visa and DTV application process. Many contributors agree that such requests are increasingly common, especially to verify that applicants meet visa requirements and have the necessary financial backing. Concerns about stricter scrutiny and documentation to prevent misuse of visas are evident, with various insights about individual circumstances, such as previous visa status and citizenship.

You are asking for a visa to Thai embassy before coming to Thailand? If course you need to give your bank statement!

Seems very normal to me. They want to make sure people do not work illegally in Thailand while living there on long term visas.

In my opinion, I believe it is quite normal if the officer sees that you previously held another type of visa in Thailand.

Additionally, the document was not originally included in the standard checklist, but the officer may still request it at their own discretion.

Oh surprise! They are actually cracking down on those attempting to come in on the ED Visa who don't truly meet the minimum requirements. Bottom line is anything they ask for, they are asking because what you may have submitted clearly doesn't meet what they are asking for. If you are asking if this is normal it is very likely because you are unable to provide it and you're desperately hoping to skirt around the system somehow.

Bottom line is they don't want an influx of illegitimate or broke foreigners who are unable to support themselves, spending long periods of time in the country. Can't blame them for that.

Anonymous participant 568 This is someone applying for a DTV while having previously held an ED visa.

If this becomes more widespread then it could prove to be quite a problem to a number of DTV holders/applicants who had less than legitimate ED visas in the past.

There are talks, about major changes in DTV and ED visa. So guess they now have started to request hard proof and checkups on documents

Christian Skoglund All visas are being reviewed. Anuting the PM wanted this when he was Head on Interior. Said too many different types and too many departments involved in issuing them.

They want to check you were actually attending your studies which is a requirement of the ED visa and weren't just using it as a means to be in Thailand. They also want to ensure you were not working while you were studying so you need to show how you were able to support yourself while not working

I suspect that this is more of a Myanmar passport holder issue than a broader DTV issue but this may be part of a broader crackdown.

They can ask whatever they want, as long it's within reason. In this case, it seems OK. They might suspect you were working illegally while on an ED visa and might fear you'd do the same under the DTV.

If you didn't do anything wrong there's nothing to fear about 🤷🏻

they can ask anything they want - period. Your addition "as long as it's within reason" is ridiculous. What your suggestion if it's not within reason in the applicants opinion? Refuse the request? What will happen then you think? It's not up to us to validate what's reasonable or not. You want what you apply for you do what they ask.

There is no normal anymore it would seem. Many recent posts would suggest closer scrutiny of applications.

exactly Greg! They are tired of the number of unqualified applicants tempting to slide in using ED Visa without true intention of using it for what it was designed for, nor being able to meet the minimum requirements.

Anonymous participant 568 I mean there's nothing formal yet but just from posts and hearing things it does seem like there is some change in the air.

It’s normal when you have been on another visa with a Thai bank account. I have heard of people getting rejected for even showing the Thai bank for the proof. I think they ask in the forms if you have held any other visas in Thailand. Shouldn’t be a problem if you’re legit. People are going to mess this Visa up for people that are legit and following the rules.

Whether or not it's normal, it's very clear what they want. This implies they are asking you to prove that you did not earn income from activity performed inside Thailand by showing how you funded the Thai bank account which is why they're asking if funds came from a foreign source, and proof you were truly studying on the ED visa.

Which embassy? First time I have seen this request, but if you were using the ED visa properly, there should be no issue, correct?
