I entered Thailand 2 years ago on an O-A visa. Immigration said they cannot extend an O-A visa in Thailand. So they issued me with an Extension of stay based on Retirement stamp. So will I need health insurance on my next extension.I am living here full time with bank account prerequisites etc.which I had to show on renewal.I was told that the only way to extend an O-A visa by one more year, is to exit Thailand just before visa expiry and re-enter Thailand to automatically receive 1 more year, giving a total of 2 years on the visa. This can be done once, and then you have to re-apply in your home country to get a new O-A visa.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user entered Thailand on an O-A visa and has been informed that they cannot extend it. Instead, they have received an Extension of Stay based on retirement, which raises the question of whether health insurance is required for their next extension. Comments from the community indicate that, as per recent regulations, health insurance will be mandatory for extensions that originated from an O-A visa. However, clarity exists that if an applicant started their extensions on a different visa (Non-O), insurance may not be required. The discussion also includes alternatives such as exiting the country and reapplying for a different visa type if insurance becomes an issue.

I have been told that if people say they heard or they have been told it is hearsay and can not be used as fact. I see a similarity at the moments when the address registration came into play. Lots of people start thinking, heard the most horror stories and it was all published as a question on this page. Now Immigration announce 1 extra requirement for the Non Immigrant O-A visa and following up Extensions of Stay and every body start hearing things or being told things and start typing their fingers blue to express their thoughts, feelings and telling everybody it is not true or it is true. We will see what will happen after 31 Oct 2019 and till that, read what is announced and do not read between the lines to find conspiracy theories.

Your other option if insurance is going to be a problem is to do a visa run to a neighbouring country to get a new non-O when your current stamp is up. Then extend that. Extensions to that don't need insurance.

That is the ONLY viable option to get out of needing mandatory insurance from extensions based originally off an O-A visa.

You leave the country, get a NEW 90 day Non-O visa <-(note there is no A after that O) then you come in get the 90 day stamp and apply for a yearly extension of stay after that.

Yearly extensions of stays based on retirement off O visas are not subject to insurance requirements.

They usually hand out a printed set of instructions about the conditions of the extension. Are they doing this for insurance yet?

unknown. If you really wanna know I see a trip out to Chaengwattana in your near future.

I was at CW this past Friday and two immigration officers told me that next year retiree renewal will need health insurance from a Thai company

There are several reports of people saying they have been told by immigration Thai insurance only, notwithstanding that form. The police order also says Thai insurance. I'm not sure about the logistics of getting hold of two directors of a global insurance giant to sign it even if it were possible.

IF you got a new passport since you started getting your yearly extensions of stays from the immigration office look on the first page of your passport where they transferred the stamps (and noted the visa from the old passport). You will clearly see if you had an O or an O-A visa that started it all

it is only for those who entered on an OA and the insurance does not need to be from a thai company

ONLY if you have started your extensions from an O-A visa <- which is a visa you get in YOUR country before you come here.

If you started your extensions on an O visa you do not need insurance.

well they told you wrong

They DID extend your O-A visa, by a yearly extension of stay based on being over 50 (retirement)

You just don't understand how the process works going from a valid Non-Immigrant Visa to a yearly extension of stay.

And yes, when you go to get a new extension of stay based on being over 50 (retirement) because it was started off an O-A visa you WILL need to show proof of health insurance.

yes it looks like, but don't you have one ?

After 31 Oct 2019, yes you need

pretty sure you will
