Is health insurance mandatory for a 90-day Non-O visa application from the Thai Embassy in Wellington?

A friend is looking to apply for a 90 day Non-O (aged over 50) from the Thai Embassy in Wellington, New Zealand. On the NZ embassy website it seems to say that all Non-O visas require mandatory health insurance. She has emailed the embassy in an attempt to clarify and they direct her to the long-term insurance page ([members only]) which only talks about O-A and O-X visas, so she is a bit confused. I offered to reach out on this page to see if anyone could confirm whether the compulsory medical insurance is in fact required for the 90 day Non-O visa. Many thanks for any assistance provided.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A friend is seeking to apply for a 90-day Non-O visa for retirees aged over 50 at the Thai Embassy in Wellington, New Zealand. There is confusion regarding the necessity of mandatory health insurance, as the NZ embassy's website indicates that health insurance is a requirement for Non-O visas. While a commenter clarifies that insurance is not required for extensions processed within Thailand, it may be needed for initial applications made at Thai embassies abroad, as indicated by experiences of others who successfully provided proof of insurance for their applications.

In my case, for Non-O 3 month retirement, the UK Thai embassy also asked for insurance. They accepted the Travel insurance I get with my Revolute bank account. I attached the page showing cover and amount.

Same was also accepted for Thai Pass.

You are mixing a couple of things.

IF you are applying for an initial Non-O based on being over 50 (and a 1-year extension) at the local immigration office IN Thailand, insurance is not one of the requirements.

BUT

if you are applying for Non-O single entry at the Royal Thai Embassy/Consulate OUTSIDE Thailand, you need to follow the requirements there.

We have noticed now that many embassies require proof of insurance for Non-O single, too.

thanks for the reply. I realised that some embassies are have different requirements to others but what I'm trying to clarify is of the embassies that do ask for insurance are you saying they are now asking for the same health insurance that before was only required for the OA?

, detailed insurance conditions also depend on the embassy/consulate. Maybe same to OA, maybe not. Check with the Thai embassy/consulate in your country for detail.

I was asking about health insurance for a non-O outside of Thailand, not Covid insurance for Thai Pass

@Ellie ******
when you say "now many embassies require proof of insurance for a non O" are you talking about Covid insurance or are you talking about the health insurance people on retirement visa are required to have, (which I believe now is $100,000 US)

@Dirk *******
, about required insurance to apply for a single entry Non-O visa based on being over 50/retirement/pensioner (depends on how that embassy calls)

Thanks for your answer. It is definitely being applied for outside of Thailand. I will get her to see if any of the recommended insurance companies provide a 90 day policy that meet the medical insurance criteria.
