Is a return ticket mandatory when traveling to Thailand with a DTV visa?

Jan 21, 2026
For everyone asking whether a return ticket is mandatory: I have my DTV, and the lady at the front desk asked for my passport, my visa and my return ticket an hour ago. Luckily, I had booked one with Onward Ticket — it cost €16 and I was all set 👌

TLDR : Answer Summary
The necessity of a return ticket when traveling to Thailand with a DTV visa is debatable. While the original poster was asked for a return ticket by the airline staff, many commenters stated based on their experiences that it is not mandatory if you hold a DTV. Various users shared their encounters with airline checks and Thai immigration, indicating that the requirement for a return ticket often depends on the airline staff's knowledge or discretion, rather than official regulations. Several expats suggested always being prepared with documentation to avoid potential issues.

To be clear the lady at the "AIRLINE " desk asked before you departed for Thailand, this happens sometimes and usually after a brief discussion & proof of Visa they will check you in. Thai immigration rarely ask for the return ticket ( I have been stamped in over 50 times and never been asked) however they may ask if they feel it is necessary. Necessary generally means they suspect your reason for travel is not true or you are an overstay risk or see some other issue. Unlikely when your on DTV.

Lol I had zero issues re-entering via airport the same day I flew out the country to Malaysia. Literally zero, she stamped my passport, I asked to make sure it was 6 months and that was that. My process was...

1) filled out the tdac online including my visa number

2) took 20k baht cash with me just in case they asked. They didn't ask.

3) passed them my Dtv visa document and my passport and that was all that was needed.

Malaysia didn't even stamp my passport as its all digital there now which worries me but seemed immigration didn't care. They also didn't ask any questions or care how long ide left the country for due to being on Dtv.

Of course people's experiences will differ. My advice is always take more than you think youl need so nothing can go wrong if they ask for stuff but a return ticket makes no sense on a 6 month entry

Thai immigration has never asked me for an onward ticket with the DTV or visa exempt.

Before my first DTV flight last year, I was ready to do a quick OnwardTicket booking, but first I wanted to see how it will go, at the end - it's not really neededed, as expected:

Turkish Airlines worker saw the visa and asked for a return flight, I told them that my visa is 5 years multiple entry, they looked at it again, and said 'No need then' :)

Flew in 4-5 times after that, can't remember if some asked again, but there was no any problem.

On arrival Thai immigration didn't ask for return flight, only how long I'm staying, I say a month or two... Seen some reports where they ask for return flight ticket, not sure is it real or not, but I'm ready to book it on the spot if it ever happens.

I got asked that at check in Ho Chi Minh. My hotel and flight out bookings, i said i had a visa, showed it to her (she took a picture of it), handed me my boarding pass. You don't need an onward flight when you have the visa.

Obviously the airline check-in staff was in error. When that happens ask to see a Supervisor.

or just tell her, you have a visa. How should she know that? No need to escalate for nothing.

there are times it takes a Supervisor to override the desk check-in staff. Some staff are still not aware of the DTV visa.

You do not NEED a return ticket for a DTV. I was also asked by the airline agent for a return ticket but told her I had a DTV and after she reviewed it, she said I didn’t need one
