TLDR : Answer Summary
When arriving in Thailand on a DTV visa, you do not need to show a return ticket after the 180 days period. Instead, proof of onward travel is sufficient. Some airlines might require a return ticket during check-in, but it is not a requirement imposed by Thai immigration for the DTV visa.

I came to Thailand on a tourist visa without a return ticket, just an onward one. I had no problem doing that.

No entry ever requires a "return" ticket. Just proof of onward travel leaving Thailand. But DTV does not require it
