Many thanks to all the responses and great information! I now see that the Non O marriage visa is the best way to go. This is exactly why I joined this group. Thanks again and I can’t wait to get there and start meeting people and begin my retirement! 🙏🙏🙏😎😎😎🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭

I am getting ready to retire to the Korat area of Thailand with my Thai wife, probably in the next 2-3 months. I am trying to understand the OA long stay visa, and I am using the Thai E-visa official website, but I’m having some trouble understanding just what I need to do to get my application approved. I am from the US so hoping that there are people on this page from the US with experience having recently gone through this. I meet the financial qualifications so that’s not a problem. But can anyone explain the medical certificate and the certificate of criminal record clearance? Where do I get those? I have posted the page and it’s basically numbers 5-8 that are making it difficult. Any help/advice would be much appreciated! Thank in advance.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A poster is seeking advice on the OA long stay visa process in Thailand, particularly regarding the medical certificate and the criminal record clearance required for application. Responses indicate that some expats suggest applying for the Non-O visa instead, highlighting that it can be simpler and does not require the same documentation such as a medical certificate or background check, particularly if the applicant is married to a Thai citizen. Various community members share their experiences, offering tips on obtaining the needed documents from local authorities and references to specific resources.

My dad did the OA visa and it was hell!!! It is so much easier and faster to do the O visa. , which is what my husband did also. With what you go through with the OA, I don’t know what the benefit is, but why anyone wouldn’t just do the O.

@Jamie *************
thanks that seems to be the obvious and much easier and hassle free way to go. Also you only have to have 400k baht in a Thai bank acct as opposed to 800k.

my husband still had to have 800,000? But check again, they change things here all the time

Careful. The "O" in non-O stands for other. There are MANY non-O visas, including retirement, marriage, volunteering, parent of a half-Thai child, etc. You can't just say non-O, you have to say non-O retirement or non-O marriage, which are the 2 being discussed for you.

It's the non-O marriage that has the 400,000 requirement, whereas the non-O retirement has an 800,000 requirement.

ok I want the Non-O marriage. For me it looks like that’s the best option. It’s the most used, least hassle, and also least expensive, ie only 400k baht instead of 800k for the Non-O retirement. Once again your expertise has been most useful and is greatly appreciated. Take care and thanks again!

From the US on Non O based on marriage. Working perfect 👍

Unless it's changed in 3 years, for the medical I went to my doctor and after he was done laughing he filled out the medical form. For the background check I used the FBI website. I needed to get fingerprinted at a post office offering the service. Usually I'd get the results via email within a couple of hours.

When I got my visa, I applied at the Washington DC Embassy through the E Visa system. I applied for a 90 non O visa based on married to a Thai. I did not have to get a medical certificate or a police record clearance. When I got to Thailand and my visa was about to expire, I went and applied for the one year extension at which time of course you have to have the money in the bank I think it’s two months before you apply, but the entire process was very simple Very simple. before you apply for your extension you need to go by the immigration office where you will apply for the extension and ask them for a list of documents. You will need to bring when you apply for the Ext.

@Wayne *******
great info thanks! So can I get that visa AFTER I arrive in Thailand or do I have to get it before we go?
Wayne ********
@Rick ********
I did mine before I came using the E Visa. Make sure you check which Thai Consulate you need to submit your application to. I believe there’s six in the US and each one has jurisdiction over specific states. I lived in Texas and the Washington DC Embassy is the one assigned for Texas.

@Rick ********
if you don't already have a Thai bank account, you need to get it before you go. It's impossible to open a Thai bank account without a long term visa nowadays and the bank account is required for anything to do with non-O visas.

@Brandon ***********
ok can I have my mother in law open it for me? Or do I do it online and if so what’s a good bank? Thanks!
Brandon ************
@Rick ********
you can't do either of those things. It has to be a bank account in your name only. You must open it in person. Without a non-O visa you won't be able to do it. But the non-O visa is very easy to get through the same online portal you were already looking at. It's called the pensioner visa for less than 90 days stay.

@Brandon ***********
ummmmm. How do I open an account if I have to have one before I go, but can’t do it online? Sorry but that doesn’t make any sense.
Brandon ************
@Rick ********
you can get the VISA before you go. That's what you need to do. You cannot open the bank account online.

ok I think there was some confusion here. I thought you said a needed to get a bank account BEFORE I go, but what you meant was I need to get the VISA before I go and THEN open a Thai bank account in person after I arrive in Thailand with my visa. Is that correct?
Brandon ************
@Rick ********
Yes that's exactly correct. You need the visa in order to open the bank account.

Brandon Thurkettle 3 months seems like a quick turnaround if the 800k needs to be in the account for 2 months when applying for the extension? I am considering this route but concerned that one month might not be enough time to get a bank account opened in Thailand, especially since I will also need a certificate of residence from immigration. What ar your thoughts?

Think u are getting the non oa.

For medical cert. Go to thai embassy web there is a medical form which u need to take to yr doctor to test for tje disease and get sign off.

Medical insurance, go to AXA web Thailand they have insurance especially for non oa visa.

Non criminal record, go to fbi web, (you have to dig in their site) download the form, select the place for lifescan. Take the form and do the lifescan results should be available in days. I got mine non criminal letter before i got home. I had my scan @ a fedex center.

Good luck.
Kenny *****
Sorry for non criminal record i actually use this site service.

thanks that’s what I was wondering. I know how to get the check for the state I am in but it says I need it for the country. Good info!
Brandon ************
Just want to check if there is a reason you are going for the Non-OA instead of the non-O? There are certainly some cases where the non-OA makes sense, but the vast majority of people get the 90 day non-O visa which only has a money requirement, none of the other requirements like medical check, criminal records check or insurance. Then you apply for annual extensions in Thailand by showing 800,000 baht in a Thai bank account.

While the non-OA is for 1 year, you can avoid depositing money in a Thai bank account, but you'll need to return to the US to get a new one every 2 or so years. If you try to apply for extensions in Thailand not only will you have to have the 800,000 baht in a Thai bank account, you'll also have the insurance requirement, so it's the worst option if you want to remain in Thailand.

Also, you said you have a Thai wife, so why aren't you applying for a marriage visa instead? The requirements to extend in Thailand are half that of retirement, only needing 400,000 in a Thai bank instead of the 800,000 like retirement requires.

ok that last part I had heard of and is probably the way I will go. I would only have to do until I turn 65, that’s when my work pension kicks in and the monthly income is enough. But as for having to return to the states every 2 years I don’t really wanna do that. I want the visa where I just have to re apply every year in Thailand. Anyway thanks for the info!
Ronnie *********
@Rick ********
There is nothing from Thailand or the US asking us tò return to the US every two years. Get the Non-O visa from the Thai embassy in the US. Come to Thailand and immidiately open a bank account with 400,000 (if you want to apply for a visa based on being married to a Thai--Can work in Thailand if you wish) or 800,000 (retirement visa--cannot work in Thailand). Go to local immigration office and have a talk with them.

@Ronnie ********
I think I misread his post. I see that what I would do is apply for the extension after 90 days. Then I just re apply every year. Looks like it’s the way to go with the least amount of hassle and also the smallest amount of money I have to have in a Thai bank acct. Thanks for the clarification!

can you not do the retirement visa? It's much easier. I first attempted spousal visa. They needed so many papers but would not accept the documents because they were not translated. So I ended up just applying for the retirement visa. I had enough to keep 800 k in bank. They do not accept 65k monthly deposit because US will not verify anymore. I just extended for another year(my second).I am assuming you have a Thai wife. I got my non o based on visting family. 90 day. Report your address to immigration. Open your account ( I recommend Bangkok Bank) immediately with 800k baht. I would cushion it because I was getting 15 baht withdrawls.they were charging me 15 baht for texts. I had no idea why. ( do not let it go under 800k Because that 800k has to remain untouched , it resets when it falls below)Let it season for 60 days then you can extend for a year based on retirement. Go about 4 weeks before your visa expires get the list of documents that your provincial immigration will require. Get those docs together. ( copy of passport and all pages stamped. Copy of visa. Copy of bank statements etc , And head back to immigration. You will need to stop at bank on way to immigration to update your passbook and get a certificate of verification from bank that states your money has been there for the required time. You will make copies alot at immigration. Good Luck

yeah it is now clear that the Non O marriage or retirement visa is the easiest and most hassle free way to go. Not sure why anyone would choose the other option. Also with the marriage I only have to have 400k baht in a bank as opposed to 800k. So this is why I joined this page and asked the question. Got a lot of great info and learned a lot. Many thanks to you and everyone that contributed! Maybe we will see you when we get there.

Marriage visa was not easy. Retirement was so much easier

non-OA is also a retirement visa. You have to be specific. non-OA retirement visa has higher requirements than non-O retirement visa.

You get the criminal record clearance from your local sheriff department. Because this isn't common in the states, you may get a few weird looks and have to go to several different people and/or departments (I had to drive all over Houston to get mine).

As for the medical certificate, your PCP (primary care provider) or family doctor can easily do this.
