I am definitely wanting to retire to Thailand but Is £300,000 enough for a 59 year old to retire as it will be another 8 years till i get my pension, i have a bank account already which i am building up the required amount cheers steve
Answer summary
The consensus among commentators is that £300,000 can potentially be enough for a comfortable retirement in Thailand, especially if managed well. However, the amount may vary greatly depending on lifestyle choices, such as spending habits on dining, entertainment, and accommodation. Factors like inflation, health insurance requirements, and the need to maintain a minimum bank balance for visa purposes (800,000 THB) are also critical considerations for expats planning long-term residency in Thailand.

Depends on how you manage your money wisely. For example - £ 30,000 = 1,300,000 baht per year will last you for 10 years but on your first year will cost you more to settle down and 2nd year onward if your keep your budget at £30,000/year you will have at least £30,000 for rainy day.

£300,000 in a NS&l government bond currently yielding 4.8% for 3 years . Would give you £14,400 per year. ( for 3 years at least it may go up or down after the 3 years of course )I’m not sure if you pay tax on those. Just looked and apparently as of today, there is a 10 year bond yielding 4.92%!

Been there done that and it was a lot of fun 😁 But money runs out quickly that way 😆 So don't do what I did. The right way is to buy a condo since you cannot own a house 100% and lead a quiet slow burn life and sprinkle it with occasional female company 😃

Good luck 😉

Depends on many things like lifestyle, health, inflation, exchange rate fluctuations to mention but a few but also how dependent you will be on your pension in 8 years. If you need to keep & use some of the 300k for longer then need to plan accordingly.

In the meantime make a budget and work out what you need to spend and forecast your cash flow. Sounds doable on 300k but needs careful planning.

More than enough. You might meet a women and then she wants a house. So your 300k might vary. If you’re just paying an average condo rent you’ll have enough until your pension even if you splurge on food mixed between western and Thai. I spend about 70,000b a month for 2. I eat out all meals a day and order grab basically daily. I never check the price. 95% of the time I’m having Thai food like mookrata and shabu buffet. Just so you get an idea on how my spending is. You’ll get people who says they can survive on 20,000b a month. That’s true but they’re having moo ping with stick rice the morning 30b and kapow 50-60b. So, yeah your 300k pound should last you 8 years. Also, you invest your 300k in stocks or how ever you like the gains are about 8-10% and take out what you need here and there. Let your money work for you

I did similar and had to go 11 years before my pension started. Take things easy, rent don't buy yet and remember that you are living here not on holiday. Make a budget and stick to it, when I came over it was 50 Baht to the pound and then Brexit hit and it dropped to just 36 at one point so I had to adjust the budget a lot but managed. You can still live cheaply in Thailand if you don't spend all you time in the bars and eat Thai food or cook for youself but western food and even things like sauces can be expensive when you can find them. Places like Pattaya are much easier for a single guy and western food is easier to come by but more expensive than Issan so maybe try short term rents in different areas first before deciding where you want to live full time. I spent 10 years in Pattaya and now live in Khon Kaen, the life up here is much slower but suits me.

I would try to dip into it as little as possible. Try to get an income from it and live within the means it allows. A sensible person could probably manage but it wouldn't be a hedonistic lifestyle. An idiot can be relieved of it very quickly as is known to happen frequently here.

Realistically you need 18k deposit for your retirement visa,

You probably would need to buy a motorcycle that would leave you 30k available cash,

Your investment of 250k at a 4% tax free account would give you 10k a year.

This means you keep your lump sum until you pension kicks in,

10k is doable but you don’t get bells and whistles.

Stephen, presuming you mean a UK state pension and only that, I'd figure on 8 years of simulating that out of your 300k. That's about 90k. 20k for retirement visa. 30k emergency fund. That leaves £160k

Presuming you live to 90. 32 years left. 160k divided 32 is 5k

So 11,400 "pension" from now. And 5k drawdown. Over 16k a year Over £1300 a month.

If you have any impulse control in a supermarket in the UK you will in Thailand too. £1300 monthly or over 50k baht is easy living.

If you are a drinker and partier then probably not but if you are more laid back then you might have a chance. Don’t forget about the 800,000 baht that You Must have in a Thai Bank. silly advice. fantasy on paper figures never match real life. I have been a landlord for ages. I have been an investor of large sums for ages and own/owned umpteen businesses. The reality is much more difficult....not always. I have three properties in the uk and have had the same tenants for 5+ years. But I have had tenants skip, tenants trash places, scammers using properties as a base. I also own/owned rental places in france and Thailand. I have multiple businesses. I have invested/invest large sums transnationally. Add in the ever present risk of stock market/property crash/unforseen medical bills, defaulting tenants. repair and depreciation. Paper figures never work out. And its a steep learning curve. Invest through others and they bleed your profits. Let others manage properties and they are usually incompetent. Best advice is simply invest defensively, spread risk, dont get into property as the solution unless you really know what you are doing. Even the advice buy two 'good condos' is laughable. isnt every professional investor looking for the same? Where are these good condos for a guy who is a foreigner? Shares and bonds? Who chooses what shares and what bonds. Does the guy even know how to identify defensive stocks and bonds? As for returns on condos.....I can beat any condo return on UK property any day of the week. The guy has pounds. telling him to buy condos is mad advice. My UK properties outperform Thai condos year in year out. in capital growth and income. Not always extremely short term, like Russian influx or the White Lotus effect. But long term steady and predictable. And who can predict those fluctuations. And of course if you move to phuket or samui to manage thses 'good condos' your living expenses shoot up. And like any bubble, you live with the fear of it bursting. tell the OP to stick to what they know. Live cheaply, let the interest build up from safe investments in his home market. Dont get seduced by bar girls and hookers.
Keith *****************
Keith *****************
Rae Wang that's a long post and I only scan read it. Yes....dont invest in UK property. That would be crazy. Yes do buy good condos with respected developers in Thailand and rent them out. The yield is good. The market stuff is the authodoxy for illustration. I have lots of friends who do just this. I do just this and of course you need to educate yourself.....UK gilt yields are climbing 😂

Simon Anson Tax is not the showstopper people think it is.

On the property side, Thailand allows expenses and depreciation allowances against rental income, so taxable profit is often substantially lower than the gross rent received.

On the investment side, the Thai government has been back-pedalling on the foreign income rules. The current direction is that foreign income earned after 2024 may be exempt if remitted to Thailand in the same year or the following year, although the final legislation has been through several revisions and is still evolving. Income earned before 2024 remains exempt.

Chan Chai Peter Phrom That is broad statement. If you plan to live in any country and stay away from the native, you will become a effing migrant that does not integrate. Surely starting by learning their language, rather than thinking English is the only language, you will take a big step to becoming part of the community.

I have seen a lot of what Thai women did to their husbands. I saw American husband drop his wife at restaurant where she worked and during the lunch break she was fool around with young Thai chef. How long is a piece of string?

If you have 300k GBP then that would be about 13m Thb, over 8 years that's 125k Thb a month.

You could live like a celebrity in most parts of Thailand, in Bangkok you'd have a fantastic standard of living, however, If you want to live in a 3 bed hi end condo in Thong lor, and want to visit Michelin star restaurants 2 times a week and have the top medical insurance then you'll be no better off than you would in Britain.

It's costs and balances.

Janin Ackx why would I need go fund me? My healthy mind can think things out. It was costing me $3,500 AUD a year at 68. They told me in 5 years it would go up as I am getting older, with inflation to around $5000 AUD. As you go through your 70s insurance goes through the roof, by 80 they won't insure you just as you are now going to need it. So far my health is good. In 10 years I will have saved $50,000, I will use that to pay for any medical needs. I save the money I would have spent on insurance. We will both arrive in our late 70s without insurance, the insurance company will have your money, I will have mine. It is a gamble in that I don't know what is just around the corner, but I get regular check ups so I am monitoring by health and can take action to avoid a major health event. I also have accident insurance as I ride motorbikes.

Christer Bau Well how are you going to invest it? 300k @5%is 15k/ year.

That's about 650k baht a year without touching principle. If you have some risk tolerance and invest in stocks you could easily attain 8 - 10% a year without touching principle.

You could live a reasonable life on 1.2 million baht a year.
Emile ******

John May it does depend on lifestyle, but 54k baht per month can be get you decent life. I'm in Udon Thani, rent for a 2 bedroom townhouse in the middle of the city is 10k per month, with utilities. I spend 2k on geoceries and eat out often for about 200 baht a day. And that is pretty much all i really need here. So would have enough to splurge a little here and there when i feel like it, but I enjoy the quiet life
Chris ******
Chris ******
I'd say you won't be able to live in Thailand's more expensive areas. But you do have enough money to retire comfortably I think. Obviously it has a lot to do with they lifestyle you hope to have in retirement.

Depends on the budget you are comfortable to live with.

You can live for very cheap but likely will not be happy. If you like to drink a lot, that raises your cost of living a lot. Also depends on what type of rental you want. You can get decent ones for very good prices but if you want something nicer, then costs go up.

Best to go for 3 mos (or better for 6 mos) and do a test run with an affordable option to see if it works.

are fine for many but not all. If you're not in bars all the time, that is a huge money saver. A gf is also better than bar girls and the like. Your budget shouldn't be an issue and if you're still happy with it after a year, you're set.

Definitely doable and if it's ever not as great as you thought/want - what is? Ultimately, is it better than not living there - your answer should be the same as it is with many others. That it's worth it.

YellowLynx3592 Did you have to show 800,000 Thai baht in a Thai Bank? If you are married to a Thai then it’s only 400,000. If you have equivalent to 65,000 Thai baht coming in to your retirement account then you do not need the 800,000 Thai baht.
