Okay what is a realistic amount of money I need to be able to show that I have per month to actually live off of and I don't mean to live frugally I'll be planning on Thailand because of the vast difference in the dollar power to the baht. What should I show that I have 2,000 a month $3,000 a month 5,000 a month what fits best and what do I actually need thank you very much
Answer summary
The amount of money you need to show for living in Thailand varies based on your lifestyle and location. For a retirement visa, you must demonstrate a monthly income of at least 65,000 THB or possess 800,000 THB in a Thai bank account. Many expats suggest budgeting between 30,000 to 100,000 THB per month depending on your lifestyle. A comfortable monthly expenditure is often estimated to be around 117,000 THB ($3,500), which includes rent, utilities, food, transportation, and entertainment. Ultimately, your living costs will depend on personal choices such as dining preferences, accommodation type, and travel habits.

I am told you need to show about $600 when you arrive. They just want to make sure they aren't taking in some homeless person.

Some guyes think 100k baht a month is a lot, you can live on 30k but do you want a nice life or just survive? I spend a lot more than 100k some months.

Maybe, just maybe prototype the idea. Come for 3 months live the life you want and see what it costs you. You can't base this stuff on someone else.

Don't ask about how much other people recommend, ask yourself how much you need for your lifestyle? A rowing boat or a yacht, push bike or an Harley Davidson, no women or loads of women, 2 beers a day or twenty , a room or a mansion, out 1 day or every day , a restaurant 1 time a week or every day , Thai food or western food , a jalopy or a Jaguar 👍😎✌Stupid Question

You’ll need more to start with to cover visa fees, initial accommodation and then 3 months rent up front if you rent a condo. You’ll need money to set up health insurance as well. Plus, if you do drink and eat out you’ll likely have a few months of excess to begin with before you settle in a bit. Rent depends where you live, inner Bangkok has less cheap options and go further out and the price lowers but you can find cheaper or more expensive condos anywhere really. Just account for travel expenses if you move further out and want to go to central a lot, also MRT/BTS stop after midnight so you’ll need taxis. Anyway. I like to drink and socialize but I also stay home a few nights a week. From time to time I travel. So far this year a week in Vietnam, pattaya for the weekend and Kho Samui for 10 days next month. I do a combination or eating at home cooking or order in and eating out. I live centrally so my rent is 25kbht a month with about 1k - 2k bht a month for other bills like water electricity and phone/internet. About another 4k a month for insurance and I’m studying Thai which is 4k bht a month for 4 months. My budget is £2000 a month which I stay within even with the occasional travel out of Bangkok. Probably cheaper in pattaya and cheaper in Chiangmai but you have to choose your life style. My biggest expenditure apart from rent and bills is food and drinking. If you drink less or don’t drink and cook at home or street food you’d spend less. If you want roof top bars and high end restaurants you’ll spend more.

Mick Aynsley thanks for the answer That's the type of it answer I was looking for

Much appreciated yeah I'll probably do all three myself regards to food consumption cook for myself eat out street food some really nice dinners every month..

Motorcycle expense for traveling around if I can tolerate the horrendous drivers that are over there lol..

Then again I'm from the Seattle area and there's a lot of hut tremendously bad drivers here.
Mick *********
Mick *********
Glen Prince I don’t use motorcycle taxis much. Sometimes for short journeys but they’re a bit risky and the traffic is almost always busy in central Bangkok. There is a really good public transport system of sky trains, subways, river and canal taxis as well as plenty of covered walkways (sky walks) which are normally cheaper and always quicker. Then maybe get a motorcycle from the train stop. Also there are taxi apps like grab. Often cheaper than metered taxis but also the destination is selected and the price fixed. Good luck with your plans.

OP
I've seen a few comments that wonder specifically what I mean I mean how much do you spend in a month between rent and travel less if I just keep it going to different cities maybe renting a motorcycle for the month I ride over here have my own bike The health insurance so is 3000 enough or $4,000 and what I meant by show is I have more money than that I just retired I have a large pension each month and social security..

Is that the ridiculous amount accordia some of you there there's no way I could spend that much in that very well may be true.

But I think the first few months I'll probably spend more than I will say on month 7 and 8 ??

The amount of money you need depends completely on how you live. If you eat real Thai food and don't spend all your time in the bars then you can live quite cheaply but if you want to party every night and only eat expensive western food then it's going to cost a lot more. As only you know how you are going to live you should spend a month or 2 in Thailand and find out the cost for yourself.

Malcolm Whitlock yeah definitely wouldn't be spending every night in the bars but that doesn't mean I wouldn't go out for a nice dinner every night..

Alcohol's just never really been that much of my thing..

So I'd be sending my money on T-Bone steaks lol instead of Jack Daniels
Malcolm **********
Malcolm **********
Glen Prince well the steak is going to be expensive as you will not want to eat Thai steak, it's really tough. and the imported (Aussie) isn't cheap. Like I said the best thing is to come over for a couple of months and see what the cost is for you but also remember that if the intention is to retire (over 50) then you have to get an O-visa and that is only issued by an embassy outside of Thailand unless you want to spend about $2000 using an agent to get one here.

Your question is unclear.

“What do I have to show?”

In order to be able to LIVE in Thailand Longterm, you need to SHOW that you fulfill certain financial requirements.

*** for a 1-year Retirement Extension you

EITHER SHOW

that you got a minimum of 800,000 THB in your Thai bank account

OR

You can show an income affidavit of your embassy in Bangkok, over a monthly income of a minimum of 65,000 Baht.

In case your embassy does not issue such an income affidavit, you would need to show 12-months of accumulated monthly transfers from abroad of a minimum of 65,000 Baht into your Thai bank account.

*** What you have to SHOW, might differ greatly from what you NEED for a decent living in Thailand

This totally depends on your lifestyle and the location in Thailand where you live also is playing a role.

It's like asking how long is a piece of string - it depends on where you settle and what lifestyle you want. What food you eat. How often you go to the bars. How likely you are to be scammed. Your health. Too many variables but I am sure you get the idea. What is a comfortable life to one, isn't to the next. We all have different needs and wants.
Glen ********
Glen ********
OP
Mary Gerber okay under the big picture I understand what you're saying but I'm just saying the equivalent of let's say I go to live in downtown Seattle you can say that you can't live on $3,000 a month there it's not enough but you could say well yeah the minimum to make you survive comfortably is going to be $4,500 that was just the basic idea in me asking.
Mary ********
Mary ********
Glen Prince it would help others help you if you give them basic information. For instance, Bangkok or Pattaya are higher cost than say Hua Hin and Hua Hin is higher than smaller places like Prachuap Khiri Khan. It'd also help if you let them know what basics are important to you. Me I just wanted a Thai style cottage on the beach, the bonus for us is that it costs half of the budget we planned for. The more info you give people of what you are looking for, the better equipped they are to help you. No Seattle here though, closest you'll get to that vibe would maybe be Pattaya.

I guess the biggest thing I have comes to terms with is if I spend $1,200 a month on rent that I can still buy one heck of a lot of things for $1,800..

I'm in Washington State right now the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment is probably $1,800 and to get a nice one a heck of a lot more money than that which doesn't leave you a lot of money left over for the rest of life expenses but I have been researching and it does look like I can get away with $3,000

I know people who survive on 40,000 per month with few issues (local food, rural area, minimal health costs, minimal travel, no nights out) up to 200,000 - and others spend more than that (primarily higher housing costs for larger, western style homes).

It depends on what you mean by "show"? To whom will you be showing it and for what purpose?

If you're thinking of retiring to Thailand on a Non-O retirement visa you need to show either 3 months income of a minimum of 65k baht per month or 800k baht lump sum. To obtain the 1st 12 month extension of stay you can only show an 800k lump sum in a Thai bank but for further extensions you can show 12 months of transfers from overseas of a minimum of 65k baht per month prior to applying.

As to what you will actually spend, it's entirely up to you.

The above figures don't include a 401k that I have..

Nor the money I have in my bank or stocks etc.

I actually only came across this idea about 6 months ago when I was watching a video it saw how far my dollar could go I was just vaguely interested in can I still live a nice nice lifestyle on 3,000 a month or does it take more than that I want to live comfortably eat comfortably air conditioning etc etc all the comforts I have here in the western world but at a reduced price

But I mean I've not required to show every bit of money that I have right?.

Alexa have three sources of income have them retired between pension fund social security and 401k I meet the minimums that everybody says by far by far and way I'm of average wealth over here but over there yeah I don't think I'm going to have a problem I was just kind of wondering how much it's going to be sucking down my my accounts and probably not at all I might have difficulty spending all the money which you know would be good thing
