There is no limit as of yet...nor have I heard of anyone that has been stopped with that visa at immigration yet...could things change in the future yes...but now you can basically live here as close to full time as possible

There is no official limit posted and I know people on their third 6 month METV from the same consulate.

nope, as a rule you can only get a 6 month METV from the thai consulate in your country. No consulates in S/E Asia will sell them unless you hold legal residence in that country.
