TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, as a US citizen, you can enter Thailand on a visa-exempt entry for 60 days. If you travel to Singapore for a week and then return to Thailand, you'll receive a new 60-day visa-free entry stamp. You also have the option to extend your stay for 30 days at the immigration office for a fee.

So, assuming one is cool with taking trips around SE Asia every 60-90 days and returning to Thailand, are there any advantages to the retirement visa over this method?

you're most definitely not gonna LIVE in thailand on free 60 day entry stamps for any great length of time. At some point you'll get pulled aside asked what you're doing and told to get a visa to stay here

Hi, I have been to Thailand 6 times this year, I fly home for a while and come back for 60 days exempt visitor visa stamped at Thailand airport, no questions ever asked, it seems to me a visa is not needed if you fly out and re enter

If you come here without having bought a visa at a thai consulate in your country before you get here, you'll get stamped in FREE for 60 days on what's called a "visa exempt entry" and you can extend that entry one time at the immigration office for 1900baht

When you leave that stamp cancels.

So if you go to singapore for a week then come back to thailand you'd get in on a NEW 60 day free entry stamp (and could extend that for 30 days at the immigration office too if you wanted to for 1900baht)

nope, not true... There's no 6 times limit.

Your entry by land, sea or air is totally up to the Thai Immigration officers who greet you on your arrival.

the twice roule was for land-entries.

But since July 15th there existe no more restrictions about the quantities of entries; but the immigration officer can ask you why you enter and refuse if he is thinking that your purpose is not tourist but living in Thailand.

those "some" would be wrong, there is no official limit to the number of 60 day visa exempt entries you can get entering by air or land

if you came in by air, the most visa free (exempt) is 6 times per year, regardless of how long you stay each time

not sure about that but 6 entries would give you 360 days in all.

... 6 entries would technically give you 540 possible days if you extend each one, but that's unlikely to fly with immigration.
