I have a student visa from a school in Chiang Mai. I plan on leaving next month... I'll get a re-entry permit. I plan on coming back in April but going down south for a month before coming back to Chiang Mai. When I get back will I have a 3 month stay or do they calculate it some other way?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user is concerned about the duration of their stay upon returning to Thailand with a student visa and a re-entry permit. They plan to leave next month, return in April after traveling to Krabi, and seek clarification on whether they will have a full 3-month stay upon their return. The discussion includes important points about visa extensions, the role of re-entry permits, and the necessity to return before any granted extensions expire.

I think I will come as it expired already so I will need to come back on a tourist visa and get another year of school. Got that part. Since I want to go to Krabi for a month... can I get an extension there and come here to apply for the Visa at the school or does it have to be within the first 30 days?

no I wouldn't waste the money on it if you're comin' back after the extension expires BUT what I would do (so that you don't have problems on the next ED visa) is go to the immigration office with a letter from your school stating you are stopping studying on the day you are flying out of the country so they can cancel your current extension.

That way you won't have any problems when you come back in and go to apply for a new ED visa and extension.

Thanks man. One more question. Since I will not come back before the re-entry expires... should I even get that? I think its a waste of money and time since it won't benefit me at all.

if you came back in on a tourist visa (or even a 30 day visa exempt stamp) you can extend that for 30 days at the immigration office for 1900baht. You can extend that in Krabi and then go back and apply for the school and new ED visa.

That extension will be for 90 days, AND when you buy a re-entry permit all it will do is stop that expiration date from canceling when you leave the country. It won't add any days to the extension.

You'd need to come back into the country BEFORE the extension expired or you'd cancel everything and have to start over with a new visa.

I have done two extensions already and will do one more before I leave.

are you still on the original 90 day entry from the visa you got at the thai consulate? OR are you on an extension of stay that you got at the immigration office?
