Hi all, I’m heading to Chiang Mai in November with a return to Australia booked in April. I originally planned to get a six month ME Visa, but am now thinking that I should get a three month visa, head to KL for a break then come back to Chiang Mai for a couple more months. My question is will a three month visa work given that my return flight is outside of the three month visa duration?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is considering getting a three-month tourist visa for Chiang Mai but is concerned about their return flight to Australia, which is outside the three-month visa duration. Comments indicate that while a three-month visa allows entry within three months and provides a 60-day stay, obtaining a six-month METV may be more advantageous as it allows for multiple entries and extends stay almost up to nine months. Users clarify that all tourist visas grant a 60-day entry that can be extended.

Thanks Tod, that is good to know, I really appreciate your response and agree that the METV makes good sense

the 6 month METV will get you almost 9 months of stay in thailand (in 60 day increments) and is good for unlimited entries/exits to thailand for the 6 months the visa is valid for.

I'd say if you're not going to be in Malaysia all that long, just get the METV, that way you have a visa when you come back to thailand and will get stamped back in for 60 days.

If you're talking about a single entry tourist visa you need to understand that the visa is VALID for 3 months after it's issued <- meaning you have 3 months to enter thailand and get stamped in for 60 days <- (just so you're clear, ALL tourist visas get you stamped in for 60 days).

You could extend that 60 day entry by 30 days at the immigration office for 1900baht but there is no tourist visa that stamps you in for 3 months
