I had retirement visa annually extended since 2013, but last year a company got me a work permit which was issued on 11 November 2018 expires on 30 November 2019. My current visa is an extension of stay valid until 16 January 2020. Is the expiry of the work permit related to the visa? Why are the dates different? If I cancel the work permit now is visa still valid?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The retirement visa and work permit are two separate documents with different governing authorities and purposes. The work permit, issued by the Ministry of Labor, allows you to work in Thailand, while the extension of stay comes from the Royal Thai Police Immigration Bureau and permits your residence in the country. The different expiry dates reflect their separate purposes and regulations. If you cancel your work permit, your visa will still remain valid until its own expiry date.

Two different things, a Work Permit is from the Ministry of Labor and allows you to work for a company, at the place doing the job as described in this Work Permit and you have an Extension of Stay from the Royal Thai Police Immigration Bureau that allows you to be temporary inside Thailand by giving you a stamp inside your passport with an end date.

Thanks for your help. It all makes sense now.

If you can not meet any of the requirements for an Extension of Stay you get a stamp Application not approved and 7 days to leave to county.

You cancel the Extension of Stay based on working and you directly apply for a new Extension of Stay for example based on being over 50 years of age. If you meet al the requirements you get a new 1 year Extension of Stay stamped in your passport and does not have to leave.

No, the day you cancel the work permit is the day your Extension of Stay based on working inside Thailand must be cancelled,

No, if you stop working you hand in your work permit at the Ministry of Labor and cancel it, if you like to continue working you apply with document of your employer for 1 year Extension.

@Robert ******
does that mean that on November 30 when my work permit expires I do not have to take any action?
