My friend has a one year volunteer visa that expires on December 25 2022 . His work permit expires June 22 2022. Question is if he doesn't renew his work permit can he still stay on the visa until December or not? Thank you

TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual cannot remain in Thailand on their volunteer visa until December if they do not renew their work permit. The comments indicate that the visa may actually be an extension of stay, which is contingent upon maintaining the work permit. If the work permit expires, the terms for the extension will no longer be met, requiring the individual to cancel the extension at the immigration office.

I never heard that you get an extension longer than to the end of your work permit. Very strange

It's not strange. It happens.

I would bet if your friend actually looked at their stamp they'd see that it is NOT a visa at all but an "extension of stay" ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

AND that means when the terms to have that extension are no longer met (like cancelling a work permit) they have to go and cancel that extension of stay too

So no they cannot stay until Dec, when their work permit runs out they go cancel their current extension at the immigration office.
