Hello everyone. I need some help and information PLEASE!!! My step mom was born in Thailand in 1957 and has been in the United States for over 40 years now. She has Dementia now and can not remember where she placed her birth certificate. My dad needs it for insurance and social security purposes. I have called everywhere to try to get help on how to get a birth certificate from Thailand. Also, I have her maiden name but have no idea on how to spell it. (Suminajacasant) That's how it sounds. I contacted the hospital in Bangkok and I can request her medical records but I need the correct spelling of her maiden name and a hospital number which I have no idea on how to get that either. Thank you in advance!!! Any information will be helpful.

TLDR : Answer Summary
An expat seeks to obtain a birth certificate for their stepmother, born in Thailand, who has dementia and cannot locate her documents. The community suggests contacting the district office (Amphur) in Thailand, the Thai embassy in the US, and possibly looking into adoption records, given that she was adopted in the US. Multiple comments provide insights into dealing with bureaucracy and suggest exploring Thai attorneys or medical records for assistance.

Being born in 1957 it would be hard to get a birth certificate here in Thailand because most ampors have no records that far back they tell you to contact the hospital that the person was born and then the hospital tells you the opposite. If she was adopted the adoption agency should have records. They couldn’t have done the adoption without proper records. You have to call the embassy in your jurisdiction. Depending on where you live. Calling different ones won’t really help

You mentioned she was adopted in the US, do you have the name of the the person who adopted her (Stepfather) or his wife? Or does she have any stepbrothers/sisters or extended family in the US. You may then be able to use that to access her adoption records and hopefully get a copy of an original passport (US or Thai) and trace back that way?

You say she was adopted in the US so she must have traveled there by some means. Original Thai passport, travel document from the US Embassy in Thailand?

If however she travelled illegally and was granted permission to stay then subsequently adopted, you may have the unfortunate situation of there never being a Birth Certificate to begin with. 2 friends of my wife’s family here in the Philippines and currently in their early 20’s are facing bureaucratic nightmares because their parents didn’t register their births. The same happening in 1957 is a definite possibility, especially if she’s from a remote area of Thailand.

Yeah thats what I am worried about. She has worked in the US for over 40 years a college university graduate and has a California ID card, with all that you would think her birth certificate would be on file somewhere right??

we have tried the US immigration and they want a copy of her birth certificate even though she has been in the US since she was 7 and was adopted over here. No one will tell us any info. If she was adopted by a US citizen would she still need a green card? Sorry it's so much info and all confusing. We have been trying for 3 years now and dealing with immigration.

She doesn't have anyone left in Thailand that can do a POA for her. And she is sick with deminia, so she hardly remembers anything.

lol. Thank you. She has nothing... her father passed away in the army in Thailand and her mother remarried a us army guy and that's how she got to the US. My dad has contacted the uscis to and it's a big mess. I have called the embassy in Washington DC and in San Francisco. I will try the one in Vancouver

As Federico has said, being able to spell her name phonetically will do you no good. Unless she has any old documents with her name in Thai, or a Thai friend who could spell her name for you in Thai characters, you are probably out of luck. You might try having her speak to somebody at your local Thai Consulate/Embassy who could write her name for you in Thai.

I'm sure there are people with the same family name living in the district she was born and they will be able to find the correct spelling.
