How can I obtain a Non-O visa in Thailand after my initial 60-day stay?

Looking for some advice.

I’m a Canadian passport holder.

Married to a Thai.

I need to get to Thailand ASAP due to the passing of my mother in law.

I don’t have time to wait around for the non o based on visiting family, my wife.

I’m going to arrive and receive the visa exempt 30 day stamp. I’m aware, I can extend it for another 30 days.

My question is, how do I go about getting a non o once my 60 days expire? Can I leave Thailand to a neighbouring country and apply for one there? If so, which location would be best?

Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking guidance on obtaining a Non-O visa after initially entering Thailand on a visa-exempt stamp, particularly due to a family emergency. They plan to enter with a 30-day visa exemption and an extension for another 30 days. The discussion highlights that it's possible to apply for a Non-O visa while in Thailand, with stipulations including proof of financial stability (400,000 baht) in a Thai bank account, potential paperwork requirements, and the option to switch to this visa type without leaving the country.

No need to leave Thailand to apply the non o visa

I just did the marriage visa. It's a real pain in the neck. Probably worth it if you intend to stay for year or more. I hired someone to do it for me. It was probably expensive but having someone to navigate the paperwork who also has connections makes life easier.

You will need a bank account in your own name. Only a few banks can accept overseas transfers over 50,000THB. Plan to park 400,000K in the bank for a couple of months.

You will need a bunch of other paperwork, wife's address, tambon card (whatever it's called), original marriage certificate, photos of you and your wife, etc etc.

Not to forget they might visit you at home...

If you have at least 15 days left before exemption expires, you can file a TM87 to change your Visa status to Non O. Financial proof required tho (400k baht in a Thai bank)

Are you planning on staying in Thailand indefinitely?

If so, you can apply for the 90 day Non-O based on marriage. It will require you to have 400,000 baht in a bank account in your name only, and your wife will need to accompany you to immigration.

If you are just trying to extend your time during the visit, after you get your 30+30 on visa exempt, you can then apply for the 60 day visiting Thai family extension.

Thank you for your detailed reply.

I do plan on moving to Thailand permanently, but not at this time.

I’m looking to spend a few months or so there on this trip.

I wasn’t aware that I could apply for the 60 day visiting Thai family visa inside of Thailand.

Off the top of your head. Do you know what the requirements are for that?

Thanks.
