Can I apply for a Non-O or Non-OA visa after entering Thailand on a tourist exempt visa?

I am in Perth, WA, Australia at present. Any visa takes 4+ weeks from here as there is no Thai Consulate in Perth and we have to apply online and send passport by mail and then wait for its return. Also you must have to have Air flights booked for the application ( how do you do that when you don’t know when your passport will be returned!!)

So now I think to go on a Tourist Exempt if so can I apply for a non-immigrant multiple entry O_A visa ( one year) in Bangkok? So I then have tome to secure a permanent address, and apply for Retirement Visa. I have the funds.

Thankyou for your advice.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster (OP) is currently in Australia and facing challenges in applying for a Thai visa due to the absence of a consulate in Perth. They are considering entering Thailand on a visa exempt status and subsequently applying for a Non-O multiple entry visa for retirees. The community suggests entering Thailand on a visa exempt status, which grants a 30-day stay plus a possible 30-day extension. The OP can then apply for the Non-O visa within Thailand, meeting the requirement of having 800,000 Thai baht in a Thai bank account. There are discussions on the challenges of obtaining a bank account while on a tourist visa and the necessity of fulfilling specific financial requirements for the Non-O visa. The OP is advised to inquire directly at the immigration office about requirements for the Non-O visa.

I believe that the OP has helpful information on her quest for the retirement Visa and One year extension of stay as retired in Thailand... We wish her success.

I opened a bank account with visa exempt on Koh Samui with Bangkok Bank.

1. got copy of TM30 from my landlord

2. went to immigration to request a residence certificate showing my passport and TM30

3. Bangkok Bank asked for residence certificate and passport and opened a savings account for me. Took me 45 minutes and thousands of signatures 😅

so in total I spend 3-4 days to get it

Thankyou, I’ll be on Samui, this is very helpful.

Just fyi, it might be very challenging to get a Thai bank account based on visa exempt or tourist visa. Even with my non OA visa many banks declined as krungthai, Krungsri,.. Only kasikorn in my case and Bangkok bank support this based on my knowledge.

Better you wait for your non o visa from Australia and book the flight a little bit later or flexible ticket to change departure date.

Ex Perthite myself.

Come in on visa exempt then get the 30 day extension.

Apply for NonO based on Retirement once in Thailand.

Remember the Non OA requires the Insurance where Non O doesn't.

@Gordon ********
Is this what you did? ( apparently cannot get a Non OA in Thailand only in your home country.) I’ll get insurance in either case.

If you did this can you message me the procedure, the requirement, how did you open Thai Bank Account on a Tourist Visa Exempt?

Either get a 60 day tourist visa in Australia which will give you 90 days stay in Thailand (60 plus 30) or visa exempt for total of 30

plus 30 day extension. If you go 60 day visa they won’t hold you to the exact flight you enter in the system. There should be an entry on the form where you put expected day of arrival. Your visa will be valid from this date and you will normally have 90 days in which to enter Thailand on it.

@Gooddy ******
yes, I know that but it takes 4+ weeks to get it from Perth. Too long a wait for me. Also to book a flight I have to

pay extra fees to change it not knowing when I’ll get my passport back. Its messy. In the past I’ve always got a 60 day visa in a few days but now no Thai Consulate in Perth it makes things difficult.

@Glenice ********
so come in visa exempt. Will give you total of 30 plus 30. As mentioned, you can apply for a non o visa retirement when you get here but be careful, a small number of immigration offices require you do seed the 800k baht for 2 months before you can apply for the visa.
Ellie *******
No, Non-OA is NOT available inside Thailand. Only your home country or where you have legal residency.
James ********
YES you can enter Thailand Visa EXEMPT and get 30 days stamp on arrival plus One 30 day extension of stay at Thai immigration office for 1900 Thai baht.

When you arrive, visit the local Thai Immigration office and ask them for their requirements for the Non O Visa as retiree and the One year extension of stay as retired.

There's NO OA visa issued inside Thailand... It's the Non O Visa and you will have to meet the financial requirements for it... 800,000 Thai baht in a Thai bank account in your name only.

Thankyou James.

I tried to call them but no answer as I need to have their requirements on hand to apply. I’m now sending them an email. (As I don’t want to have to do a visa run in 60 days).

I’m a retiree here in Australia not in Thailand but wish to apply for Thailand. I haven’t a Thai Bank account, last time I was there (2019) it was very difficult to get one on a tourist visa. So how to do that to apply for a Non O Visa?

@Glenice ********

looks like then I’ll have to book flight I can change and stay 6 weeks and apply in Australia. Or do visa run at 60 days.

Can I fly to Vietnam/Penang and get 60 day (+30 ext) = 90 day there?

@Glenice ********
Just how long are you staying in Thailand?
Glenice *********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@James *******
as long as possible, I want to retire there.That is why I want an O or OA visa.

@Glenice ********
The OA cannot be obtained inside Thailand.

The Non O Visa as a retiree can be obtained inside Thailand.

You will have to meet the requirements for the Non O Visa by having 800,000 Thai baht on deposit in a Thai bank account in your name only.

You can arrive into Thailand Visa EXEMPT and get 30 days stamp plus one 30 day extension of stay at Thai immigration office.

When you first arrive, visit your local Thai immigration office and ask for their list of requirements for the Non O Visa as retiree and the One year extension of stay as retired.

Also you could obtain the Non O Visa as retiree from your Thai Embassy or Consulate in Australia. Then will get you a 90 day stamp on arrival into Thailand.
