How can I explain my financial sustainability while applying for a Thailand DTV visa under Soft Power?

Mar 11, 2025
a day ago
DTV application submitted. They have requested information on how I will sustain myself while in Thailand. I applied under Soft Powers, and have 500,000 TBH+ in my savings which I showed them. Could someone please advise me on what I should say to sustain myself? I am not working, but could get an online remote job, is this valid? I do not have income except £100 per month for admin work with my father's online business, is this enough? I could also mention returning to the UK to work over the summer, but this is just an idea at present as I have enough funds to sustain myself.

Thanks :)

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on how to demonstrate financial sustainability while applying for a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) in Thailand under the Soft Power category. They have savings of over 500,000 THB but are currently not working, only earning a small amount from their father's online business. The community provides various suggestions, emphasizing the importance of having a clear financial plan, considering potential remote work opportunities, and suggesting they may need to show proof of income or financial support to satisfy visa requirements.

Sounds like you’re in a good spot! They just want to see a solid plan, so mentioning remote work or freelancing could help. If you need a quick resume check for online jobs, I review resumes for free. Just reach out!

Lots of speculation in this thread about what the DTV is, what it’s meant to be, what it’s going to be etc etc.

you’ve been asked a question by the consulate. You must have a plan as to how you’re going to sustain yourself whilst in Thailand. You’re going to live off your savings.

Tell them that.

0 has to be kept all 5y. What’s plan for bills without dropping lower?

no - it doesn’t

I understand that you can dip out and then you have to show that it’s there and can dip down and then show it there and dip down etc… so it has to be there.

What I’m saying is you can’t have 500k and just spend it down
Todd *********
@Alicia *******
yes, of course you can. They don’t ask you to show the amount when you border bounce

Just my two cents: I wouldn't say you plan to look for remote work because that does not indicate anything concrete. You would be better to get a letter of sponsorship from your father or his online business saying you will make X amount of money per month. I wouldn't worry too much -- as long as you can prove you have a source of income or something to fall back on, your visa should be approved no problem.

I would temporarily change my income from my father's business to £1000 to satisfy the required criteria. Once the visa is issued it can be repaid.

This isn't shown on any of my statements however, only £100
Ian **********
Anonymous participant Tell them it is changing to 1000 as soon as the visa is issued and get a letter from your father's business confirming this.
Elise *********
Def not enough if all you have is 500k baht savings. Because technically you need that in 6 months time for an extension. So what are you going to live off of? $100 a month? Impossible.

No chance champ...

I would first supply concrete income answers, with follow-up income by remote work. I suggest you gather up some evidence of your remote work experience or portfolio to show it's not just a dream. Also suggest you get a sponsorship letter from your father along with his sufficient funds bank statement.

Am I able to say I intend to work remotely once settled in Thailand?
Ian **********
Anonymous participant No, a DTV is not a settlement visa

what does this mean? Can I not do remote work on the Soft Powers DTV?
Paul *******
Anonymous participant You can. He means you can't settle in Thailand on a DTV. You can only spend 6 months per entry, or 180 + 180 days if you're able to get it extended.
Anonymous ******************
Did you recently work? If you did you could provide a tax return, payslips and a letter explaining you quit your job and now taking a break to travel.

Last resort i think you could have your dad write a sponsor letter that he will cover you financially while you live in Thailand, should your 500k savings run out. You'll probably have to include his bank statement too. Not sure if it'll work, they are getting so much more critical with soft power

If I get the visa I plan to work remotely. Would it be okay to say this? I was concerned whether I could work remotely with the soft power DTV
Lee ***********
The 500k is needed to remain in the bank for extensions at present, but can be asked for at anytime. Question is pertinent you need addl income for daily living. Your 100 won't cover the soft power alone.
Lewis *************
Isn't the whole point in the 500k to show that that is how you're going to sustain yourself?
Lewis *************
@David ******
but the visa is 180 days at a time so you that's more than enough for 6 months.
David *******
@Lewis ************
no - the visa is for 5 years. Maximum stay any one entry can be 360 days - 180 days plus 180 day extension. 500k baht will not see you through the 5 year validity of the visa.
David *******
@Lewis ************
but that will not sustain you for 5 years
Jason **********
They want to know how you make money. How did you get the 500k to start with? How do you plan to earn money going forward it's that simple. Seems like a reasonable question. If your answer is I don't have a plan and I only have 500k baht they will most likely denie you. They assume that you'll end up working illegally in thailand if you don't have a previous source of income to fall back on.

It doesn't make sense. I'm curious — how do Chinese or Japanese people even work in Thailand?
Anonymous ******************
I was wondering what to say as well. I’m applying for soft power but I’m self employed with a few clients doing remote work.

Do they ask for more than bank statements showing income with soft power?
Anonymous ******************
Last month my friend who applied for soft power in hcmc was asked for proof of income, even though his application said he was unemployed. He had to submit tax return, 6 months of pay slips and wrote a letter he quit his job and is now taking a career break

Savings mostly, and will look into getting an online remote job, but I was concerned whether this would be okay for the Soft Power DTV. I don't have a job currently but will look for one
John *******
Anonymous participant - I would state this then, in your response. The problem is (doesn’t fully make sense), is if you extend in Thailand, you need to show that you still have the 500K, so they don’t expect that you use those funds
Christopher *********
@John ******
that means soft power DTV doesn't need to exist. If you need to have a job then everyone can do hard DTV.

Makes no sense.
John *******
@Christopher ********
Agree, doesn’t fully make sense, but several embassies seem to be asking this now, with Vietnam being the main culprit.

Anonymous participant did you file income tax last year anywhere?
John **********
Seems a reasonable enough question. 500k baht is not a lot for 5 years
Christopher *********
On soft power they normally don't ask that question your savings is how you would sustain yourself weird
Anonymous ******************
@Christopher ********
They are doing it now... Before not, but now more and more.
Christopher *********
Anonymous participant 254 makes the soft power dtv visa irrelevant than.

If they ask for proof of work, definitely. They might be a bit more flexible with other sources of money, like savings or other assets, but I haven’t heard of that happening so far. We may see the DTV going back to its roots being a visa for digital nomads only...
