Does having funds in a Thai bank account help or hinder the DTV visa application process?

I'm just wondering if anyone has applied with funds in a Thai bank account and whether that would make things easier or harder since DTV holders are not allowed to open a bank account.

I've got mine opened around 6 years ago when I worked as an English teacher in Thailand.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the implications of having funds in a Thai bank account while applying for a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) in Thailand. Users indicate that it is generally not a hurdle to have funds in a Thai bank account during the application process. However, there are concerns about the future of such accounts once the DTV is issued, as banks may close accounts once they become aware of the visa type due to the regulations against DTV holders opening new accounts. Some advise using bank statements showing total funds without detailed transaction records, while others suggest that keeping funds in a foreign account may avoid potential tax liabilities.

I’m still not sure why it’s in anyone’s interest on DTV to have a Thai bank account. Tax liability after 180 days is triggered by sending money to a Thai bank account in your name. Keeping money in a foreign account and pulling from an ATM gets around this.

Anonymous participant 561 well, if I'm not mistaken, tax liability applies to income earned as of Jan 1st 2024. Anything earned previously is exempt. Moreover, Thailand approved a 5-year exemption on capital gains from crypto (2025-2029) which is a blessing for those with a Thai bank account 🙂

I’m assuming it might only be problematic if that account shows evidence of frequent deposits as if you’re working there. Other than I guess it’ll be alright. Maybe just a bank statement with your total instead of your bank book which shows every transaction.

Anonymous participant 876 oh, okay. You said deposits. In that case, I would agree with you that they could raise suspicions. In my case, I have frequent bank transfers which I can prove they come from investments from abroad.

They don’t care. All they want to see is the funds available. Then you start living here and they will freeze or close your account and say you are a tourist. 😂 well the first part is true

Yes I used my kbank account which I opened years ago. I was also in thailand so I went to get the proof from the bank in the morning, flew out to cambodia in the afternoon and applied for the DTV in the evening. I had no issues.

may I ask you how long ago you got your DTV? Immigration is clearly getting more strict due to misuse.

April this year. I think if you meet the criteria and present it clearly then it will be fine. I spend 3 days creating a 27page pdf for my application. Didn't get one question. Straight to approval.

Yes I'm also wondering the same thing. My bank is also Krungski bank which inntheory is more lenient towards foreigners having accounts. I am going to talk to them before changing the visa in any case.

For the application, it wouldn't be a hurdle. It won't play against nor for you. However, once you come to Thailand on a DTV, the bank might sooner than later close that account, IF/WHEN they find out you're now on a DTV.

Yes, there is not a blanket closure of DTVER accounts it is dependent on the specific bank.

Funds can be in a Thai Bank account. Thai embassy and Thai immigration know exactly your track record in Thailand, and in your case it’s works for you not against you
