TLDR : Answer Summary
A DTV (Digital Nomad Visa) valid for 5 years becomes invalid once you switch to a Non-B visa after obtaining employment in Thailand. According to cabinet resolutions, changing visa types inside Thailand results in cancellation of the original DTV.

similarly (on topic i hope), can we therefore change the DTV to a retirement visa when/as/if the time comes?

you're getting the cart before the horse a bit, especially on a visa that has been out for 6 weeks (and a day 😛) The terms of that visa says it can be changed to another visa type inside the country. NO ONE knows how that really works at this time

should be able to. Yet to be seen in practice yet. As all things in Thailand it will likely come down to your local immigration office.

nope doesn't work that way, the spelled it out in the cabinet resolution that it can be changed inside the country to another visa type (it's just like going to a Non-B from a free stamp or tourist visa entry)

BUT

once you do change the visa type inside thailand if you get a job and that DTV is cancelled

so better to work as a consultant via your home business rather than be on the “books”

you can't legally work for a thai entity on the DTV. It's actually an "employment prohibited" visa class.
