TLDR : Answer Summary
The question revolves around whether individuals on a Thai retirement visa can use a joint bank account to fulfill immigration financial requirements. The consensus in the comments suggests that many immigration offices do not accept joint accounts unless they hold double the required funds (1.6 million THB), which could lead to complications. Most respondents recommend that couples maintain separate accounts with the necessary amounts instead to avoid issues, particularly as policies may vary by immigration office.

sure they don't accept joint account unless you haven't parked 1,6 million plus in it. But they will accept two separate accounts, and they will even accept only ONE account with +800.000 THB in ONE's name, and the married partner can go "piggyback" or if you don't like to be compared with pigs, "trailing" is another valid term. WHAT and WHICH parts of all the advice above, do you not understand ?

Immigration officer Ch Mai informed me they will not accept joint account just one week ago

and did you tell them you had DOUBLE the required amount in the bank to cover the proof of funds for the extension
they want a printout from your account from the last 6 months signed bij your bank .Has nothing to do about how much money you have. And this account should be on your name only
if you are using banked money for an extension of stay based on retirement most offices allow a joint account IF you have 1.6 million baht in it (double the required amount because half is yours and half is your spouses).
AND since they changed the seasoning requirements for banked money on retirement visas to 800K baht in the bank 2 months before, 800K baht in the bank 3 months after and then the balance can't go below 400K baht for the rest of the year MOST immigration offices want a print out from your bank showing the last YEARS worth of activity on your account to prove you followed the rules.
but you are the couple who was told the totally false statement that you need to show 50K baht a month of expenses here too and that's 100% false. One final time people, IF you are told b/s (or something you believe to be bullshit) by an officer STAND UP TO THEM. They are low level, passport stamping, paper-pushing government workers not godz. You always have the right to appeal a decision in writing and you must get the answer in writing too.
and as you and your wife are new to this group, you need to know we go way out of our way to post the most accurate information we have and can get.
Good luck with your extensions, at least you're covered for another year. AND next year before you go apply for the new extension stop in the immigration office before hand and see if any policy has really changed. Remember if something sounds not correct, it's probably NOT correct.
Good Luck, glad they gave you two the extensions this year :)
the only problem with the piggy-backing is that if the person with the main extension passes away, then the piggy-backer loses all those benefits. However, if they both have an extension in their individual names, then there is no issue

In their case they are tying up 800,000 more that needed. Both are age 50+.
then one of you use your own 800,000 Thai baht bank account to obtain the one year extension. The other TRAILING on it.
No need to have two separate 800,000 Thai baht bank accounts.
You could easily do one retirement and one piggy back. Chiang Mai allows it

If it is a joint account you need to have double the required money. Safer to open separate accounts. Always can be an office that refuses to accept a joint account. Interpretation of the rules up to each local immigration office.

I asked at the immigration bureau and was told I must have the double amount.

Going by your name you are not from the UK, US or Australia. Why don't you use the embassy declaration of income? No need to have money in the bank.

If you both have own account with enough fund, living in Thailand 11 years.. for what reason you need to ask about this???
sorry just curious...

On top of the 800.000.
You have to.proof that you spend 50.000 each p. Month!!
there is no requirement like that and you need to stand up to what you are being told. IF you are using banked money method to get your extension you don't need to show you brought into the country OR spent a single baht here
, I meant no disrespect I was only stating a fact (there is no "you must spend xxx baht here) rule AND that it's not a problem to disagree with an immigration officer if they're feeding you a line of b/s :O
mentioned) So you'd need a minimum of 1.6 million and that's only IF they accept joint accounts. GO and find out in person and get the name of who you talked to too..
ANd are you BOTH on retirement extensions OR is one of you on the retirement extension and the other is "piggy backing" <- getting an extension based on being married to someone on a long term visa (which doesn't require proof of funds)?

i would go to the Chiang Mai immigration office and check, OR post on a f/b page related to Chiang Mai you'll get better responses there
, you can have a shared account. But to get extension etc. you will need to have 800k per person for retirement visa on the account you show to immigration. I have a shared account with my wife plus a personal account. I use the last one to show money to IM.
