We’re two parents here on non-O (guardian) visas. Applied for our resident cards last week and going to open a bank account this week.

Do we EACH need 500,000 baht in a separate account (so $1M in totally) or can we have a joint account with 500K in it? If joint account is allowed, do we need to go for our extensions on separate days so that it’s not obvious it’s the same account?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Two parents on non-O (guardian) visas inquired about the bank account requirements for obtaining residency. They asked if they need to have separate accounts with 500,000 baht each or if a joint account with that amount would suffice. Comments clarified that each parent must have their individual account with 500,000 baht due to immigration rules, as using a joint account might not be accepted by some offices.

Basic requirements. You need 2 kids, both on ED visas. You need proof of relationship. You each need 500k baht in a bank account in your name.

What's a "resident card"?

paper you get from immigration to show that you “live” in Samui (not just a tourist). It’s apparently required in order to open a bank account here.

You mean certificate of residence? Ok, I was confused by the "card" reference. Yes you do need in most cases to open an account these days. I used to open bank accounts with a 12-month lease, but perhaps this doesn't apply anymore?

You EACH need an account with 500,000 in it because you are both applying for an extension for yourself. If you were to use a joint account, it would require 1 million baht in it. Some immigration offices will not accept a joint account at all.
