*Do I need to transfer tourist visa exempt stamp?

Hello. I am in Thailand currently on a tourist 60 day exemption but just got a new (UK) passport sent over.

I have seen the graphic attached but it mentioned the place where i should do this is place that issued my latest extension hence I am checking what happens in case of tourist visa.

1. So do I need to transfer the tourist visa to the new passport? Is so ,where in BKK?

2. And if i need to do that do i need some kind of letter from my embassy?

Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
A person currently in Thailand on a 60-day tourist visa exemption is inquiring about the necessity of transferring their visa exemption stamp to a new UK passport. Responses indicate that transfer is not needed if leaving the country but is required when applying for an in-country visa. The relevant immigration office for stamp transfers is the one that issued the tourist visa extension. If needed, a letter from the embassy may be required when traveling with two passports.

"Where to apply’ is for extension only. Initially, you have an exemption, after which you can go to any immigration division. There is likely space for one exit stamp when leaving the country, and afterward, you can use your new passport.

IF they go to exit after getting a new passport, they will get stamped OUT on the new passprot and a notation made stating they entered on a different passport # xxx on yyy date,

. So he only has to show both passports. But sure they will find some space in the old passport, don’t you think so? In any way, does he not have to go to an immigration office then? It is most convenient to find the easiest solution.

they cannot stamp them out on the old passport if he has a new one, that's what I'm telling you 😕

As an aside for UK nationals, it only took 2 weeks from application in BKK to getting an email from VFS that the new passport had arrived.

(I had asked HMPO in the UK snd they said it would take at least 8 weeks even though the VFS website says about 4 weeks).

- yes, us UK nationals based in Thailand can only use VFS and 2 weeks is excellent. Fortunately they also have an office in Chiang Mai , where I live. I know a few people who have obtained new passports via VFS but never waited more than 4 weeks.

Depends on what you want to do when your current extension ends.

If you just leave, no need to transfer stamps. Bring and present both passports (along with the embassy letter IF your embassy issued one with your new passport) at passport control at the departure airport. You will be stamped out on your new passport.

If you are applying in-country visa, you have to transfer your stamps first. You go to the exact immigration office where you applied for a 30-day tourism extension in whatever province you did.

You can check your extension stamp to see which immigration office issued your extension.

. Your old passport normally should be valid longer than the 2 months tourist exemption period. Wasn’t that the case? Why had you a new passport sent over?

i think this Q is for me and not Ellie.

Yes, passport is valid for another year or more...however have been travelling a lot and was running out of pages.

Yes, I see.

OK, thanks.

i do not have an extension (just the 60 days exempt) so in my case just bring both passports to airport if i leave within the 60 days.

I don't think I will apply for the 30 day extension.

Thx.

@Wells *****
totally correct

if you're not getting a 30 day extension you just show BOTH passports when you stamp out of the country on the 60 day stamp

hi. I have a similar situation where I have applied for my new British passport and it arrived today. I have 30 days to collect it . Last time this happened six years ago I still got the extension of 30 days on my current passport and then picked up the new one and got the stamps transferred at the border. I plan to do the same again as I'll leave after my extension runs out. As I mentioned I did that before but 6 years ago. Any more clarification on this?

In theory once you get an "extension of stay" you are supposed to go and move that to a new passport BEFORE you exit.

Not saying you can't get out the way you say, BUT just saying how it really is set up to work.
Tod *********
@Jamie ******
why not just go get the new passport then take BOTH to the immigration office

Have them move the stamps and get the 30 day extension inked IN the new passport ?

I mean what's the down side to that?
Jamie *******
@Tod ********
yeah true but I would have to go to Laksi and last time even with an appointment I was stuck there for 8 hours. That was just for an extension .
Tod *********
@Jamie ******
now you're just making excuses and if it took you 8 hours out there something was wrong then

I was with someone with an appt this week for a 30 day extension and it took them 30 minutes and we were walking OUT back to the Pink line sky train to come back to town

I mean why ask my opinion if you're just going to do what you want 😛
Jamie *******
@Tod ********
nothing was wrong. That was just my experience. I just asked your opinion because I value it. Anyway thanks

@Jamie ******
anyway, my point was IF you're just on an entry stamp <- which they won't move, you show both passports when you stamp out,

but

as a rule IF you get an extension you move the stamp (either when you're getting the extension OR after you got it) before you go to leave the country,

I'm sure people on free stamp/tourist visa entries have gotten extensions, gotten new passports and just left. I mean what are they gonna do? Deny you exiting?

I am only pointing out the actual way the system is supposed to work and when you move the stamps and when you don't need to.

The O/P is just leaving before their 60 days is up, without getting an extension (and an immigration office won't move an entry stamp to a new passport unless the old one is lost)

so they just leave, show both, get stamped out on the new one, with a notation they entered on a different passport number
