Do I need to transfer my Thai visa and extension stamp to my new passport before traveling?

Hello. I ask this question because information out there is a little hazy regarding this subject.

I am leaving the country to get a new visa for my brand spanking new passport. However, I already have a visa and 60-day extension stamp in my old passport. Before I travel would I need to transfer the two over to my new passport before travelling or would I need to just bring my old passport along with my new one when I leave the country?

If I do need the two (visa and extension stamp) transferred, is there a fee? and what forms do I need filling out?

Many thanks in looking at my question.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When traveling with a new passport after already holding a visa and an extension stamp in an old passport, it is generally sufficient to bring both the old and new passports. However, there have been isolated cases where border officials required that the extension of stay be transferred to the new passport. It is recommended to check the validity status of the old passport; if it has been nulled, the visas may technically be considered invalid. It is noted that there is no fee for transferring the extension of stay.

If your argument was correct, why would anybody buy the 20 year Thailand Elite visa ? :-)

So to be safe I should transfer over the extension of stay stamp and bring my old passport with the visa to the airport when I leave?

I see so immigration just transfer over the entry stamp and extension stamp. I'll bring the old passport over to the airport just in case they ask questions or if they want to see the visa. Thanks for the info.

IF you go to the immigration office to transfer your extension of stay stamp to the new passport they will note in it, the original passport number, the visa you had in that passport, and move your current entry stamp and extension to the new passport.

After that you don't need the old one when you exit the country

If the old passport has been nulled technically it’s not valid and same goes with the visas, it’s one in a hundred but it has happened to me in the past (not in Thailand) have asked the question to my embassy and they replied as above, if the old passport is still valid then no issues

your old passport is always canceled when you replace it. The us consulate punches holes in ours.

BUT

whether the passport is canceled or not has no bearing on whether a visa is valid. In fact visas from some countries can be valid for years longer than some passports.

I know people who have had a year-long multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type visa in their passport who got a new passport, who had their old passport canceled by their consulate when they picked up the new one AND who traveled with BOTH passports when exiting/entering the country getting stamped in and out on the new passport until the visa in the old one expired.

it’s not incorrect if your old passport is nullified, if it’s not nullified then it’s ok. I experienced the problem I asked my embassy

that is actually incorrect :/ IF you have a valid year-long multi-entry visa (NOT an extension of stay) in your old passport, when you get a new one you travel with BOTH the old and new passports. You will be stamped in&out of thailand on the new passport BUT your valid visa for thailand will be in the old passport.

They do NOT transfer visas (except thai elite and diplomatic ones) to new passports ONLY extensions of stays.

Bring the two passports should be enough, BUT we have one report from Nong Khai border to Laos who insisted that the Exension of Stay got transferred to the new passport before they stamped him out. There is no fee in transfer of Extension of Stay to new passport.
