What options does my daughter have regarding her expiring ED visa and new passport in Thailand?

Hi Y’all 👋🏽

We have a question about our daughter’s visa situation.

We are from USA.

She’s 21.

She’s been on an emergency passport that expires this coming October. Because she had less than one year left on it, her visa (education) at start was only for 3 months. It expires on January 30th.

(It was the now controversial Ed Visa).

We did visit the US Embassy in Bangkok today to swap her 1 year passport (the emergency passport) for the 10 year but this will arrive 2 weeks AFTER January 30th (the date the Ed visa expires). Should she:

A. Stay past the expiration date to wait for the 10 year? Once she has the 10 year, USA will cancel the one year. This new passport will also not have any Ed visa stamps in it (I know they can probably look it up but nothing immediately alarming).

B. Do a border run? By land or air? For how long? It would be her first time out of Thailand since coming in September.

She’s been advised to go to Cambodia and apply for a Tourist Visa from there.

Does anyone know what that entails or what’s at risk? Just trying to plan well.

Thank you in advance!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The question concerns an American family's daughter, whose education visa (ED visa) expires on January 30th while she is waiting for her new 10-year passport. They seek advice on whether to stay in Thailand past the visa expiration, conduct a border run to Cambodia or Laos, or apply for an extension of her ED visa. Answers from the community suggest options for a border run, the potential for an ED visa extension, and the process of managing her passport situation with Thai immigration.

She could have a lovely time visiting Siem Reap temples

What are you trying to achieve? If she is studying at an approved school where she attends regularly she should have no problem extending the ED visa. If on the other hand she has one of the ED visas where she didn't study a lot she probably can't extend it anyway. It may also be problematic for border bounces.

if she does a visa run, it’s only $100 rt to vietnam (I just flew here the other day) and is only 1.5 hour flight , goes by fast

ok. It’s ok for her to leave on the Ed visa and come back in on a tourist visa? Should she do it before January 30th or the day of?

that I'm not sure! I saw you mention the visa run option.

Best of luck figuring it out!

Might as well apply for the ED extension if the passport is valid until October. ED extensions are only

days and you can move the stamp from the old passport to the new one when you get it.

A border run can be done in 1 day to Laos via Nong Khai can fly to Udonthani then minivan to the border

Or can catch the sleeper train ( very nice ride ) leaving bkk in the evening arriving Nong Khai in the morning- crossing the boarder and returning to bkk that night

thank you! Super helpful!

Recommend going to Laos, it is the easiest boarder crossing, can fly back into Thailand and will receive 45 days visa exemption as she still has about 9 months on her emergency passport. She can also cross back into Thailand by land, there are also agents who take ppl over and back for an extra fee.

1800 baht for visa on arrival into Laos

Plus agent fee if goes with agent

When new passport arrives attend immigration to have the new passport registered with immigration

brilliant, thank you! Do you recommend any particular agent?

I have never used an agent however have met ppl who have, maybe make a post asking for information on agents, you could find one in bkk if that is where you are near or engage one closer to the boarder, suggest posting in Udonthani expats - Udonthani is only 60klm from Nong Khai, she can fly - bus or train from bkk to Udonthani then meet the agent to go to the boarder

Emergency travel documents are supposed to be 1 time use to get you back to your home country or until a new passport can be received. why didn't she apply for a new passport back in Octorber?

no, not necessarily. She did apply 8 weeks in advance. She was asked to come in via appointment only to confirm identify to get the permanent (10 year passport) which will be ready in 3-4 weeks.
