Do I need to show a return flight or an invitation letter when applying for a SETV visa to Thailand?

Hello

Two questions:

1. Do I need to show a return flight when applying SETV visa? Yes I will have a onward ticket when landing in Bangkok

2. Me and wife gonna stay hotel first week before traveling to her house, does she still need to write an invite or is it enough to show the hotel booking? Yes I know when we get to her house we need to go to the immigration

Many thanks in advance 🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user asked if a return flight is necessary for applying for a SETV visa and if an invitation letter from their wife is required when they will first stay in a hotel. Responses indicated that a return flight is not required, but an onward ticket is recommended (particularly to avoid issues with the airline). Additionally, a hotel booking suffices for the visa application, and the TM30, which is a notification of residence, must be submitted by the user's wife upon their stay at her house.

An onward ticket may be required by your departure airline. I know Delta/Korean requires one. As for the TM 30 as others have said, by Thai law your wife is supposed to submit one when you go to her house.

1. Normally, yes. Return or onward ticket required for visa application (not upon entry by the way).

The embassy in Norway issues tourist visa just with an inbound ticket, but regarding immigration “upon entry” an onward ticket is formally required also for a tourist visa. It’s rarely checked unless you’ll get pulled aside and questioned for some other reason.

check IATA Travel Centre. Their info comes from Thai official sources.

This is from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs own site regarding requirements for different visas.

@Jan *****************
yes, that's what I said.

@Bart *************
Did I misunderstand you? Not required upon entry?

@Jan *****************
I said it's required for the application, but not upon entry.

Ok, you’re practically right, as I say unless you’ll get pulled aside upon entry and questioned for another reason regarding you travel patterns. Then you might need to prove the formal requirements for a tourist visa; accommodation, funds and an onward ticket.

@Jan *****************
indeed, that could happen. Then indeed all requirements listed are at risk to be asked, or even other things.

You only need to have a onward ticket when arriving with a touristvisa, but you may be ask for it allready in the departure airport.

not when applying the tourist visa?

Return flight is never required. An onward ticket is formally required also for a tourist visa, but if the embassy/consulate approved a SETV without an onward ticket it’s rarely checked at the immigration, but you could risk your airline will ask for it. But if you already have an onward ticket this should be ok.

It’s normally sufficient to show proof of booking for the first nights when you apply for a SETV. This is a bit embassy dependent and some embassies are more strict.

Your wife can register your TM.30 online when you later stay with her.

so have one for the visa application another one for when I travel just in case?
Jan ******************
@Gardar **************************
If you apply in Norway the embassy doesn’t require an onward ticket for issuing a tourist visa, but according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs formal guidelines a ticket out of Thailand is mandatory also for a regular TV. With your previous history of travelling to Thailand I would have brought an onward ticket just in case you’ll get questioned again at the immigration.

Why do you need to go to immigration?
Henrik *****
@Lynnette ******
The owner of any house has to make a TM30 report within 24 hours, when a foreigner stay in the house.

@Henrik ****
most people don't bother with tm30 unless they are going to request an extension. I've never stayed anywhere that did one. But usually I leave without visiting immigration. I wondered why he was going to immigration when a property owner usually registers it online
Henrik *****
You never stayed at a hotel ?

They make the TM30 without you ever notice it, or they do dont tell you or ask you, they just comply with the laws of Thailand.
Jan ******************
@Lynnette ******
It’s still formally required and can be done online.

I know. I wondered why the guy said he had to go to immigration when he arrives.

need to do that when we go her house because I want an extension when visiting my wife. If we not do that then we have to pay a fee since we didn't register at I'm staying there.

@Lynnette ******
No need to go in person. Just create a user and register online.
