TLDR : Answer Summary
When cancelling a Non-O visa in Thailand, you typically don't have to leave the same day. Many individuals go to the immigration office a week before their cancellation date to have their visa cancelled and receive a stamp allowing them to stay until that date. However, if the immigration office does not allow early cancellation, you may need to pay a fee of 1900 baht for a '7-day application for extension denied' stamp, which gives you a week to exit the country. Ultimately, it's best to leave before your visa expires.

No. Just leave before it expires.

Most people go to the immigration office a week or so BEFORE the cancel date on their paperwork, the office cancels the extension and stamps you in until the date on the paperwork you showed to cancel the extension.

At the offices that won't "early cancel" you have to BUY that 7 day 'application for extension denied' stamp for 1900baht to give you a week to get out of thailand

Otherwise you leave the day you cancel the extension on or run on overstay

Hi. I want to get a clarification about what you said, “stamps you in until the date on the paperwork you showed to cancel the extension.”

I am scheduled to cancel my current visa next week (expires 31st of July). I asked the HR if I need to leave Thailand right after canceling, but they said I would get 21 more days to stay in Thailand before having to leave. Is that possible? I’ve only read about people leaving right after canceling their visa or obtaining the 7 days for 1900 baht.

sounds like you have a BOI extension based on employment and they are under different rules than 'regular' employees

Is it necessary to cancel a Non O visa, or can I just let it expire and leave Thailand before it expires?

if you have an extension based on marriage to a thai or retirement NO, you can do what James said, BUT if it's volunteer or for any other reason you should cancel it

just leave Thailand without a re-entry permit in your passport. The Non O based 90 days or one year extension of stay cancels.

so it sounds like the safest thing is just to cancel it the day I leave then right? I’m doing it in Chiang Mai and I’d rather not pay a fine
