Should I cancel my son’s ED visa before leaving Thailand to avoid issues with a DTV visa application?

Hi everyone, I would appreciate your advice.

My son has an ED (student) visa in Thailand, with a passport stamp valid until May 7. If we leave Thailand before that date without officially canceling the ED visa, could that cause any issues later when applying for a DTV visa? Is it necessary to cancel the student visa before leaving, or is it usually fine if you exit on time?

Thanks in advance 🙏
Answer summary
The user is seeking advice on whether they need to formally cancel their son's ED (student) visa before leaving Thailand, given that their visa is valid until May 7. Several community members advised that it is important to cancel the ED visa through the school to avoid future complications, particularly when applying for a DTV visa. Comments outlined potential consequences of not canceling the visa, including being charged daily for overstaying and facing problems during future visa applications due to an un-canceled status.

Do it,when your DTV get approved, then go to cancel. If you don’t cancel the visa it just affects the extension visa. I just have the issue but a little difference with you

If you are really on a visa without a re-entry permit then you can just leave. But if you are actually on an extension of stay, which I suspect you are, then you really should cancel it before leaving. It won't affect you applying for another visa outside Thailand BUT if you don't cancel it when you return to Thailand it really can come back to bite you. You are effectively on overstay from the moment you stop studying unless you cancel your extension correctly

The school is giving me a hard time and is not cooperating in providing the cancellation letter.

what you should respond to is whether or not you're on an extension or the original 90 day visa stamp. The answer to that determines what you absolutely must do or not do.

We are currently on an extension. We already extended the original ED visa before.

You need a letter from the school stating the last day of classes. You take that letter to immigration and cancel your visa. If you don't cancel your visa you will be charged 500 baht a day for overstay, and be unable to get immigration services.

You shouldn’t just let the ED Visa expire. Immigration requires a formal cancellation letter from the school. Without it, the visa remains on record and can block future applications. Ask the school to issue the cancellation letter. They can include the extension request in the same letter, so immigration handles both together.

LongTimeLivingInThailand Hi, just to clarify, if I don’t cancel the ED visa before leaving, could that affect my DTV application? I don’t have enough time to cancel it before my flight, so I’m trying to understand if it might cause a problem. Thank you 🙏

you need to reschedule your flight and complete the process correctly. You clearly know it is required but decided you were not going to do it, why?

I would reschedule. You may have a problem if the embassy doesn't see the cancellation stamp in the passport. Our University took 1 week to process the cancellation because they only go to Immigration once a week and the school authorized signature like Headmaster/President has to sign the request.

You def need to cancel it. My friend had an issue later on when it was discovered that it was not canceled - became a major issue

DTV_BegPecker Hi, can you please share what kind of issues your friend had exactly? I’m trying to understand the real impact. I have to leave tomorrow morning and don’t have enough time to cancel it, so any details would really help. Thank you 🙏

he had no problem getting a new visa, but when it needed to be extended (or something else, when he interacted with immigration, not too sure- maybe a 90 day reporting), they canceled his current visa (or didn’t give me an extension) and had several days to get out of country. Then he had to leave and figure out how to fix everything from afar. It wasn’t an immediate issue - but popped up as an issue 3 or 6 months later, when he was not expecting it
