TLDR : Answer Summary
When performing a visa run in Thailand, it is generally not required to maintain a bank balance of 500,000 THB. This requirement typically applies only when applying for a visa extension at immigration. However, experiences vary; while several individuals reported not being asked about their bank balance upon re-entry, some have mentioned being questioned about financial stability, particularly during border passes. It's important to note that regulations may change, and while many have successfully completed border runs without needing to show proof of funds, this may not be guaranteed for everyone.

I have seen people claim they have been asked to show the current amount upon return to Thailand lately.

I confirm, you don’t need to keep that money in bank. Never been asked.

The immigration officer can ask to see your bank balance or proof of activity on entry but it's pretty unlikely they will do so

I wanted to extend in country but didn’t have the 500k for the required time as i had to pay a bill from Bumrungrad. I showed proof of that and he said that he really understood that’s unfortunate and recommended me to run and return. Bought a trip to Laos and back the same day. The officer in bkk only asked for the reason of stay. I said medical treatment which i haf proof but he didn’t want to see my docs letter with all upcoming appointments. Just stamp and good

A border run is not an extension. They are separate things. Extensions are done at immigration offices in the country and they require you to show every piece of document you did when applying for the visa, but with new dates.

You don't need to show anything when entering Thailand, as of now, and you get 180 days easier this way.

No need to maintain the 500k when doing a border run, only when you do an extension at immigration
