Do I need to cancel my Non-B visa before applying for a tourist visa in Thailand?

I've read many, many posts, but just want to be sure I understand what applies for Me.

I entered on a Non-B with the intention of getting a teaching job. I will not be teaching here after all. (Do I need to cancel my current visa before I can apply for the tourist visa?)

My non-B expires soon so I need to plan how to get my tourist visa. I do not want to do the 30-day border run, I prefer to get a new 60-day tourist. My understanding is if I choose the Laos option (quickest) I can do a new 60-day tourist visa at the US Consulate. Am I on the right track?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user seeks clarity on the need to cancel their Non-B visa before applying for a 60-day tourist visa, indicating that they will not be teaching in Thailand anymore. They prefer to apply for the tourist visa in Laos, at the US Consulate, instead of opting for a border run. Commenters point out that the tourist visa application must be done at a Thai embassy or consulate, and they verify the user's eligibility based on their nationality.

and we're done. This highlights the importance of people knowing whether they are on a valid Non-B VISA or whether they are on an extension of stay from the visa. The situations are handled differently.

What nationality is your passport (edit, seems you have a US passport, so Laos is fine).

Thanks for clarifying it. I was confused with Non-B and extension of stay.

Right, I am not on an extension, just the original non-B so this doesn't apply to me correct?

Well, i'm sorry.

Giving incorrect advice to the OP confuses the thread, it does not help it.
Lloyd ********
Bebe, you do not have a Non-B, you have an extension of stay, totally different.

Incase somebody needs it. No need to be rude.

I plan to cancel my Non-B, go to Laos and apply for 60 day (if I'm not mistaken) tourist visa.
Lloyd ********
The OP has neither a work permit nor an extension of stay, so your advice is pointless.

I think, the extension of stay should be cancelled. I'm on the same page as you are and as I was adviced here before, they told me to get a cancellation letter from my school and bring it to Labour office to cancel work permit then bring the receipt to the immigration to cancel the extension of stay. They said you will have a hard time coming back in Thailand if you haven't cancelled the Non-B extension of stay.

I agree! haha It's the terminology that had me most confused. Thanks for the fast response :-)

I cant open that link, but trust me 100%, visas are not cancelled, only extensions of stay - totally different beasts. Correct terminology is paramount.

Hmm. I don't think that's correct. But thanks for your help! It appears I won't need to cancel it since it'll expire anyway.

Sorry. Yes, US passport.

My main concern now is do I need to cancel my non-B before I can apply for the tourist visa? It expires very soon

Not at a US consulate, either a Thai embassy or consulate.
