Do I need to cancel my Non-B visa at immigration before leaving Thailand?

Hi everyone,

Need some advice here.

I am currently working for a company and am under extension of Stay of Non-B Business Visa. It expires on January the 5th 2026.

I resigned from this job and will start a new job in January.

Documents won't be ready by January the 5th, so I will have to leave Thailand and apply for a new Non-B visa abroad.

My question is as follows: Do I need to go to the immigration to have my visa officially cancelled before I leave OR I can just abroad on, say, 4th or 5th and my visa will be automatically cancelled upon leaving at the airport/ border checkpoint?

I also have the multiple re-entry permit if that matters.

TIA.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring about the necessity of officially cancelling their extension of stay on a Non-B Business Visa before leaving Thailand for a new job abroad. The comments emphasize that it is important to cancel the visa at the immigration office to avoid issues with future visa extensions. Users recommend cancelling the visa before departing, making sure to also cancel the work permit and keeping relevant documents, such as the cancellation receipt, for the new employer.

Make sure that you get a copy of your Work Permit cancellation receipt. Your new employer will need that when they apply for your new work permit

You must cancel it with the date of last working day, not with the most convenient day of travel. Try to follow the rules.

1st, work permit must be cancel.

2nd, extension of visa must be cancel.

Do it manually and never assume it will be done automatically or by someone else because that will not get done and you will have problem coming back in later on.

You must cancel your extension before you leave if you don't want any issues.

An extension based on employment is not automatically cancelled even if it expires. An expired-but-uncancelled and existing extension will be an issue when you apply for the next extension.

You need to cancel it officially at the immigration office that issued the extension for you to be able to apply for a new extension from your new visa later.

The best is to cancel before you leave. You can cancel it later, after you enter on a new visa, but you may be fined for not cancelling in time, which means after expiry.

Most immigration offices allow you to apply for cancellation in advance, a few days or weeks. If you have time, go to the immigration office to cancel it before your travel.
