TLDR : Answer Summary
The user plans to travel to Bangkok on a 3-month visa to open a bank account and apply for a retirement visa. They inquire whether a return flight to Australia is necessary or if there are options to prolong their stay without returning.

Check embassy/consulate sites in Australia, and these for general information. And see if you can qualify for the requirements for the visa you want. Then you can decide what route you want to go on retirement in Thailand. That is the decision ONLY you can make. Nobody in this group knows your preferences or conditions for your visa. Then ask away the specific question here..

You say you will be arriving into Thailand with a Visa good for 90 days.

What Visa is it?

A Non O for retirement?

Or a Tourist Visa?

FYI ... IF you can get the OX visa from the Thai Embassy in Sydney Australia, it's best long stay visa available anywhere. NO FUNDS needed to be on deposit in Thailand.

Here is Link to recent success by an Aussie...

It's a 5+5 = 10 year Long Stay Visa for retirement in Thailand.
