Hopefully someone can help with my query. When departing Australia to travel overseas (greater than 3 months), do we require a return to Australia flight, or can we book an ongoing flight from the initial destination? Thank you ๐Ÿ™

TLDR : Answer Summary
When traveling from Australia for more than three months, whether you need a return flight can depend on various factors, including the type of visa you hold. Generally, those applying for a tourist or visa-exempt category may not need a return ticket, but airlines may enforce their own rules requiring a return ticket for boarding. If you have an exemption that allows you to stay longer, a one-way ticket may be acceptable, as confirmed by a commenter who plans to travel to Thailand for a year.

you should be fine then Iโ€™m doing it in July and will be buying a one way ticket as Iโ€™m heading to Thailand for 12 months myself

It's the airline from Australia which may require you to have a return ticket before they allow you to board your out-going flight.

Dee McDonell. You don't need a return ticket. A cheap onward ticket will do the job

Yes correct. An onward ticket to anywhere...So long as Huey doesn't front up at check-in unprepared. ๐Ÿ‘
