ORIGINAL POSTER
I am 62 years old from Australia. I was in Thailand for 16 days in August 2019. I am going back January 2020 obviously on 30-day exempt visa. do I need return flight ticket before I arrive. They did not ask for it in August 2019.

Am I able to extend the 30-day exempt visa when I arrive January 2020. If so how long can I extend it for and cost.

Also am looking to apply for retirement visa when I arrive next month.

TLDR : Answer Summary
An Australian expat inquired about needing a return flight ticket upon arrival in Thailand on a 30-day exempt visa, and whether the visa can be extended. They also expressed interest in applying for a retirement visa. Responses indicated that although return flight proof is generally not required, having it may be advisable. The 30-day exempt visa can be extended for another 30 days at the immigration office for a fee of 1900 baht. For the retirement visa, applicants are advised to check with local immigration offices for conversion opportunities.

I'd say once you get here, go to your local immigration office and see if they can do an in country conversion to a 90 day Non-O visa based on retirement at that office (not all offices can do it) AND get the list of requirements to get that visa and then the year extension after that.

Good Luck

that answers my question above :-)

Entering on a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp you can get a one 30 day extension at the immigration office for 1900baht.

Okay, you do not have an entry history that shows you have been living here on back-2-back visa exempt or tourist visa entries which means you are highly unlikely to be asked for anything.

Keep in mind ANYONE entering thailand CAN be asked for proof of 20K baht or the equivalent in CASH, proof of onward travel within 30 days of the days you'll be stamped in for) and proof of lodging.

Personally I'd have the proof of funds (just in case) but again your history is not likely to raise any flags and you'll most likely stamp right in without any issue

Not really likely you'll need flight proof.

30 days extension of your exempt entry. 1900 baht

I'm curious, what do you mean by a "retirement visa"?
Michael ********
You know what he means ;) especially as he wants to get it in country. Non O and extend. "Retirement visa" is a term that has been used for decades ;). OK it is not correct, but widely used.
