I have a question regarding the "retirement" visa. When we apply here in Australia do we have to show a return flight booking. We have only purchased a one way ticket each

TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for a retirement visa (Non-Immigrant Type O-A) from Australia, it is not mandatory to show a return flight booking. Some commenters noted that while they secured open tickets for flexibility, there is no requirement for onward travel as per the Thai consulate in Canberra's guidelines.

When I applied for mine , because it was also a multi entry I requested too , I book a year open ticket , thinking that I might return during the year at some stage , I did too , but I don’t think it’s mandatory.

I don't see where onward travel is a requirement on the thai consulate in Canberra's website. So I imagine it is not needed because they know you can stay in thailand for a whole year on that visa when you arrive

yes, they need your passport to be able to put the visa into it, also as part of the documentation pack a copy of passport. By the way, they only send back to you the passport, so the return courier envelope only has to be big enough for that.

Thanks for that Garry just another question though. Did you have to send your actual passports. I was thinking I could send copies

Yes I just followed the instructions on the Thailand Canberra website, applied for police clearance that took 15 days, went to doctors for medical, some will sign the form that you can download mine had me go through and have X-rays and blood tests waited three days and had that clearance. I put a pack together in the order they required and had a Notary Public stamp a seal on each page that cost me 6000 I could have used a Justice of Peace and apparently that’s free. Sent the documents by registered post courier with a reply paid same, you can track progress in the Embassy’s website. That process took nine days from sending to receiving back my passport.

Ok thanks heaps for that. I think I'm probably reading to many things and getting myself confused. Thanks for the quick reply. I can't wait until we've got it all done and we are there out of this damn cold

I take it you're applying for the year-long, multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type O-A Long Stay visa that requires a police background check, a medical certificate and by meeting the financial requirements correct?
