I have DTV visa soft power - Muay Thai. I am on my first entry, do I need to go the gym I applied through for my application? I have a chronic pain condition, and I'm just concerned the group classes there won't work with me. I'd rather get some private classes in another gym. The gym also isnt that easy to travel to from the area I have settled in.
Answer summary
The user holding a DTV visa for Muay Thai is concerned about attending classes at the gym specified in their application due to chronic pain and difficulties in traveling. Many commenters provided mixed opinions on the necessity of attending the assigned gym. Some argued that attendance isn't strictly enforced and that one can sign up without major concerns about physically attending classes. Others warned that failing to comply with the visa's cultural obligation could jeopardize their visa status. The user is considering private classes as an alternative and is encouraged to communicate with the gym for accommodations.

If you don't go and they find out they will kick you out of the country. Why trying to cheat like this??? Then everything gets more complicated for others who are actually really respecting the DTV conditions.

Why apply for muay thai lessons if you have chronic pain and cannot do it?

You mean cookery would be more appropriate?

You have a chronic condition and yet you willingly apply for a Muay Thai class in order to obtain the visa ? I am sorry but that’s straight up fraud imo. It’s like a healthy person applying for disability insurance or payment.

chooserich007 where in my post did I say I'm not going to do any classes? Idiots like you are ruining this group.

I would advice you to get a very good health insurance to cover your pre existing chronic pain conditions. The Muay thai school is not responsible for your bad decisions.

@Fred *****
Let’s be honest. You have a chronic pain condition and yet you signed up for Muay Thai class. There is no low intensity version of Muay Thai. That’s a bad judgment call. Now you are already trying to weasel out of attendance even before your first class. Guys like you are ruining DTV like they ruined ED visas a while back.

As you already know, paying for a service and not using it doesn't cause anyone to incur financial loss. Not a problem.

Yes that’s why those schools are being shutdown down or blacklisted.

You’re likely not going to get reasonable responses from people in this group to a question like that. They are largely insufferable about stuff like this and a lot are actually the Pattaya old boy type who don’t even have a DTV, resent it in comparison to their retirement visa, and are just here to doom on everyone.

You will likely be fine if you decide not to train. I would go there at least once though to take photos at the gym on the odd chance an IO asked you for it when you land at BKK one day in the future.

Anonymous participant 195 Thank you. Yes there have been a lot of bad responses. I still intend to go, I'm just wondering what my options are. Private classes would be easier then I can work up to doing harder work outs.

of course you can do private classes. That's what I am doing too. As long as you train regularly

at my gym they actually offered for you to be able to do tailored weight training sessions as well, instead of only attending every session as a heavy Muay Thai intensive. So it was like mix and match. You could ask about that at the place you already paid for and you might be surprised that they are happy to accommodate you and you can still get your monies worth. Nothing to lose really by giving it a go.

Anonymous participant 195 Thanks for that, I'll contact them and see what my options are. My plan was to perhaps go there for quite a while then I can move to a different gym later.

Then you don't have a soft power DTV just a DTV like nearly everyone else. I also applied via soft power and haven't been asked anything in my entries into BKK. My course ended in March 2025

Talk to the gym first. They may help accommodate you. At the moment attendance is not recorded or checked for DTV like it is for an Ed visa in some locations

Best go there and explain to the gym incase they get a phone call from immigration upon your next entry and say you didn’t turn up.

If you intend from the start to avoid the good faith Muay Thai obligations you applied under then you deserve to lose your visa as you’re making it harder for people who take this seriously.

That being said, no one checks your gym attendance because gyms don’t maintain a record.

If you can’t train, apply under a different visa.

You should’ve posted anonymously btw. There’s rats everyone on the internet.

I never said I intended to avoid attending any classes, I want to do it, I think I was just more confident about it when applying about doing group classes. I can't start off at high intensity, so thats why I thought private classes would be better.

Why sign up for Muay Thai with chronic back issues 🤷‍♀️ yes you have to attend the lessons with the gym that is on your DTV paperwork hopefully you have correct documents & the schools ID & registration they will check! You could have done the cooking option instead?

nope this is false. The government want people to get involved in Thai culture. Muay Thai is Thai culture. If you don't attend classes you don't learn nothing about it. We are lucky they did this visa but it's not gonna last because of this kind of thoughts.

They stated to check the pictures/videos and calling the gyms so be prepared

If you do not attend the school that approved the courses, your attendance will not be recorded for assessments, and your visa will consequently no longer be valid. Furthermore, simply attending a different school does not mean it is authorized.

not a requirement, not in the application, not in the website.

You’re welcome to do what you want that’s extra but quit telling people it’s required. Give them the factual information and that’s it. This isn’t “opinions about what you should do for your DTV group”.

not true most Gyms will give registration & ID tiban to show they are legitimate this is what Immigration & Airport authorities expect documentation of.

@Clare *********
it’s not an opinion. That’s the problem with the internet and these groups. Yall constantly think your thoughts and experiences are truths. No where does the immigration website, the documents you sign when you apply, nor posted signage at immigration and the airport say you need any of the things you’re taking about.

Carry your visa approval. Carry your passport. Fill out your TDAC. That’s it. Holy cow. It’s not hard. Quit being dense.

yes, documents WHEN YOU APPLY to show the school is legitimate. Not an ID band to prove attendance. The most you’ll ever be asked to show at immigration is your visa approval page. You do not and are not expected to carry your full visa application package with the gym’s information on it. You’re just wrong. Absolutely wrong.
