I will be cancelling my education extension, and will return to Thailand visa exempt (UK passport) . Question is :
do I need to take my passport to immigration to have the stamps amended?
If yes, and I am unable to do this on the day I depart Thailand (early morning flight), is it possible to do this a couple of days before departure - how long do I have to exit?
I recall reading somewhere there was a grace period of 24 hours, but cannot now find the reference.
TIA

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user plans to cancel their education extension and return to Thailand on a visa-exempt status with a UK passport. They inquire about the necessity of taking their passport to immigration for stamp amendments and whether they can do this a few days prior to their departure. Additionally, they mention a possible grace period for exiting Thailand.
You get a letter from the school about that you finish studying on date xx. Take that letter to the immigration office that issued your extension to apply for the cancellation. You will get a stamp with a new date xx.
Depends on the office, but most offices accept cancellation applications several days in advance.
You may be talking about that the overstay fine being waived if you leave Thailand by air within the next day of your stamp date.
