TLDR : Answer Summary
The need to cancel your visa extension when moving back to the UK permanently depends on the type of extension you hold. If your extension is based on marriage or retirement, it is not necessary to formally cancel it before leaving. However, if your extension is linked to an educational (ED) visa or work permit, it is advisable to cancel it prior to your departure. Additionally, some users suggest considering a re-entry permit if there is a possibility of returning to Thailand in the future.

– when I think about all the paperwork, time and money it takes to get a one year visa I only would leave after applying for an re–entry permit as long as the original visa still last some time
totally depends on what type of extension you have and if you're ever gonna come back here or not.
IF you're on an extension based on marriage or retirement, just leave it's fine BUT if it's an ED visa extension or one based on employment you should cancel it before you go
The reason for your extension of stay (being over 50) can't be cancelled because you'll never be younger then 50. You can just leave Thailand without cancelling it.
however seeing as you said you're leaving "permanently" <- which implies forever 😛 You could just leave and as long as you're NOT comin' back it'll be fine no matter what extension you're on.
